It's hard to tell what is going on with the black bit of yours, it looks like it still needs to be painted or something? Re: {dawn} SE Melb Build - 40 of 27 weeks and counting 1604Jul 08, 2017 5:27 pm I have agonised over mailboxes! In the end I found one and will order towards the end of the year. I was going to go for a brick/rendered mailbox but I am actually going for a custom mailbox on a post that will be concreted in to the ground. Builder said they would do the mailbox as part of the fence, but never asked me what I wanted... I hope it looks okay when its done, I never really thought about it. Wishing I'd thought about it now!!! Re: {dawn} SE Melb Build - 40 of 27 weeks and counting 1606Jul 08, 2017 11:26 pm aloenyx I didn't have much of a choice, as I have to have a front fence. Wishing I'd thought about it now!!! And my estate says no front fences allowed! Seriously how stupid is it, I get the regulations that help make sure there isn't 6 of the same house in a row, but dictating if there should be fences seems stupid. I'm on a corner and would love a front fence but not allowed Re: {dawn} SE Melb Build - 40 of 27 weeks and counting 1607Jul 09, 2017 8:37 am Yeah, I do think some of the rules are a little weird. We have to have rendered brick fences (I would have liked not to do the render, as I like my bricks!!). Although from what I remember of my contract, the estate rules applied for 4 years from 1/1/2014, so by January they are over... which is probably why my neighbors haven't been forced to finish their front landscaping. And tbh, very few people have followed the rules anyways!! So many people have the wrong profile roof tile, no one has the front path like I do that your suppose to, a lot of people have a fence, but not the style they are meant to have, and barely anyone has done the gardens like they were meant to (and I'm not doing it either!!). Its all a bit of nonsense really. There is one house that LOOKS AWFUL, I don't know how it got passed, it doesn't look anything like the rest of the houses, its all square... but from the artist impressions of my estate, they expected everyone to build double storeys... and 90% of the houses so far are singles. Me too. Last week of my builder's holidays this week, so not sure how that will impact. Hoping for Certificate of Occupancy, final invoice, PCI date, carpets and external works finished this week... oh and the alarm system variation to approve would be nice too. Just a few steps closer isn't it!? And that will look like a lovely dog walk for you! Boo on the front mailbox... does look pretty blah... not something to be proud of (i.e. the builders...) The gas meter was the holy grail... Yeah definitely going to enjoy the parks and walking trails around the estate. Mailbox is a fail. Hopefully they aren't done with it yet, and will surprise me... but won't hold my breath!! Oh well, at least I have a mailbox I suppose.. I have done this as well, so our garage walls are only a few cm apart, but they also built their laundry on the boundary, and they had the fence end at their wall... (as per pictures). Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ My question is to do with that patch of dirt next to their garage slab. I want to put plants here, and as my bedroom looks onto this wall I'd like to put something tall. I'm in VIC if it helps. 1. Can I do anything to their wall, e.g. paint, render, drill some sort of trellis/vertical garden into it?? 2. If I plant something there, and in a few years they have issues with their slab (possibly due to whatever I plant.. thinking roots, etc) am I liable for the damage?? Thank you experts If you did some kind of slim stand alone planter box in that gap, you could then do a vertical plant wall that just leans on their wall. As long as you don't damage their wall, there should be no reason why you shouldn't be able to grow something nice there Building our forever home! It is doable but probably not ideal to drill any holes into their wall unless you have a really good structural reason for it I think. Even then I probably wouldn't be so enthusiastic to let the neighbour put holes in my garage. However, I don't know the rules about sharing the zero boundary wall? And if your neighbour can graffiti it coz they kinda have to live with it like you are don't you? Plants wise, best bet is to avoid letting any plants root into that area because they will probably deep and under both your paving and the neighbours slab. However I'm guessing most small plants won't manage to get that deep... but I'm no expert I would do my research. If you aren't in a hurry to get it done, take your time and ask around. Landscapers probably will point you in the right direction. Put it into planter boxes in the gap, don't plant it in the ground, just have it in those long narrow rectangular pots. that'd grow up high and completely hide the brick wall. And since it's in pots, it will be totally non-invasive. I have the same thing, my study looks out onto the neighbour's 0-boundary garage and laundry wall. I am gutted as I wanted to put a vertical garden on my fence outside the study... but I have now been told I won't have a fence there, as the fence will only go to the neighbour's garage and then it's just wall. And nope, I'm not allowed to drill anything into my neighbour's wall without their permission, and the builder would advise them against giving permission, so.... I wish I had the money to buy a gigantic piece of land and be nowhere near my neighbours, but sadly that's not in the budget, so suburbia and looking out onto brick walls it is... Re: Help needed from experts!!! 1618Jul 11, 2017 9:23 am Looking great aloenyx light at the end of the tunnel! We have a similar side passage. Our neighbours built their garage right on the boundary and our bedroom wall is 1.2m off, leaving just enough space for a passage and bin storage area. Our builder warned us away from putting anything up against their garage slab/wall. We were originally planning on concreting all the way up to their slab, but were told that if the concrete was to move and damage their slab that we would be up for the damages. We put some decorative rock along the gap to make it look presentable. As far as planting anything goes I would stick to pots.... You don't want to damage your path or their slab with a root system! You would need something that loves shade and damp environment as I'm assuming that it wouldn't get a great deal of sun throughout the day and would be a constant damp space. Also steer clear of climbers... They can be uncontrollable if you leave them unattended for too long and may make their way in between your homes causing all sorts of problems. If you want something pretty to look at I would look into screens. Lots of pretty patterned decorative screening available from hardware stores or online. You might be able to paint them in a colour that you like and that would stand out against their house brick. Good luck! Let us know how it goes!! The fencer said if the garage is build on boundary and there is no space to build a fence, the garage wall will become the fence and you have the same rights to use the wall as if it is your side of fence... Re: Help needed from experts!!! 1620Jul 11, 2017 10:44 am To avoid any potential issues later that could be attributed to you, I would do something similar to Nattabs, and put some nice rocks in the gap to fill it (cover the dirt) and then use slim rectangular pots to give it some greenery.
