Browse Forums Building A New House Re: {Dawn} SE Melb Custom Build - Ever After :) 2601Oct 17, 2017 6:51 pm Definitely a good idea BC. I will add it to the list, I want so much greenery!!! Feeling very adult, just potted all my indoor plants. Ha, got this house owning thing down!! Re: {Dawn} SE Melb Custom Build - Ever After :) 2602Oct 18, 2017 7:39 pm So after three hot days in a row, realising this house is gonna get HOT HOT HOT in summer Been thinking about options to try and cool the place down. South side is the two bedrooms and they seem fine, they have block out blinds and get little sun. East side is the sliding back door and lounge window, both quite large and gets warm in the mornings. I have sheer blinds, but thinking about blockout curtains (Cheap option) and reflective tint (more expensive option). Can't really afford the tint right now, but thinking I could do curtains for less than $300.. so maybe before Christmas. West side is the worst which is the sidelight near the front door and the master bedroom, the shutters in the bedroom are good but still gets HOT. Only thing I can think of is tinting them but again expensive. For the sidelight could do tinting, maybe a cheap roller blind self installed? North side is pretty hot too, the two obscured bathroom windows I probably won't bother with.. and the kitchen seems okay, its pretty small and has the sheer blind. The laundry door is the worst, but can't see what I can do about it as with the cat door it would be hard to tint it.. maybe a blind as well. The problem with a new estate is no greenery or trees to throw shade on the house. Need a few years for them to grow a bit. Re: {Dawn} SE Melb Custom Build - Ever After 😀 2603Oct 18, 2017 8:29 pm I tinted my front room with diy tint from bunnings. It was pretty easy and I did a good job and I already had the equipment needed. It's my home office where I spend all day there so needed it done as a cheap quick option before I can afford ducted. At night I leave my bedroom door open with the screen closed and a nice breeze comes through. The rest of the house, the windows are open too with flyscreens but if it gets too unbearable then I close the plantation shutters and the curtain in the living room Coral Homes Avoca 25 in Gainsborough Greens Gold Coast Viewtopic.php?f=31&t=81406[/quote] Re: {Dawn} SE Melb Custom Build - Ever After :) 2604Oct 18, 2017 8:35 pm Oh, maybe I should look into that. I'm still waiting on screen doors to be installed so can get some breezes going, windows aren't quite enough. Eventually I want to install a split system in the master, but again.. funding issues XD Re: {Dawn} SE Melb Custom Build - Ever After :) 2605Oct 18, 2017 8:42 pm aloenyx So after three hot days in a row, realising this house is gonna get HOT HOT HOT in summer Been thinking about options to try and cool the place down. Personally i'd go with blockout curtains in the loungeroom. But then you need to decide whether to go with curtain tracks or rods. A cheaper option might be to make your own external blinds out of shadecloth which can be attached to the outside wall above the window. May not be the prettiest looking option but is effective for blocking summer sun. I think I will have to put blockouts in the lounge/dining at some stage, though when I looked at doing it last time I realised the window and door are different heights and the lounge window is to one side of the room.. thought it would all be equal. Re: {Dawn} SE Melb Custom Build - Ever After :) 2609Oct 19, 2017 4:46 pm Another busy busy day. Been trying to get something done each day as my house warming is next week and I want it to all be pretty. Ripped out the frangapani from the pots. They had died. I'll be replacing them with more of the same, but can't get any stock until November or later. Also ripped out the lillipillies, put them on the nature strip hoping someone takes them home. I replaced them with three more magnolia, looks nicer and will hopefully end up being a lovely hedge along the back wall. Grass is slowly getting greener. So I've put some stones in the pot now, hoping that will stop them. Still don't know where my rug is, should have been delivered by now. Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Cat run is getting more plants. D Some cordyline and lavendar. Will just keep adding pots over time. Also thinking of putting up some shade cloth for summer.. Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ How cute is this cat?? XD Absolutely sound asleep under the washing. Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ And Vivien, I don't get many photos of her. She's become quite adventurous, I find her all over the house now usually with a kitty stalking her. I've been in almost a week and I just find the whole landscaping thing completely overwhelming. So I've done nothing You've done such a great job! My kitty loves sleeping under the washing too, no idea why! Cat run looks great, lucky kitties! Re: {Dawn} SE Melb Custom Build - Ever After 😀 2611Oct 19, 2017 9:40 pm The grass has really improved! Viv is sooo cute! You have made so much progress so quickly! I don't think we will be so organised. https://r.tapatalk.com/shareLink?share_ ... are_type=t Re: {Dawn} SE Melb Custom Build - Ever After :) 2613Oct 21, 2017 5:18 pm Another busy Saturday!! Can't wait for one where I can sleep in and watch Netflix all day XD Backyard with all magnolias along the back now. Grass is finally coming up green D just patchy.. Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Front yard.. Moved a few plants, planted some ground covers and put in the garden edging (also put heaps of soil around). Dad finished off the paving today. Unfortunately he couldn't source any fencing, so no front fence this week. Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Hopefully after a few weeks everything will settle in, grass will go green, etc.. Last thing to do in the front yard is finish off the fence, then DONE D At least for now. Also put the final pieces on the side gate today. Garden edging is so much more effort than I expected!! Exhausting. Stupid tap is in a very annoying spot. Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Bought these pots and pebbles to finish off this side garden. Already looking better. Dad put the pots a bit further apart than I was hoping, but too heavy for me to move them XD Just need some plants. Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Friend came over to install the shower door today, but the glass supplied was too big!! So back to the drawing board. He will come back another day. Although in good news, he was able to seal all the mirrors in the bathrooms (they were all loose and falling off the walls ). He also got the big blob of silicone of the shower floor, yay!! Also my neighbors down the road are the sweetest!! Their dogs got out on Thursday with all the wind, I was home and they came by so I wandered down the street till I found the swinging gate and took them home. I ran into the neighbor this morning and let them know, in case they needed to secure the gate or something... 10 minutes later they turned up with a box of chocolates. So nice of them. Outside is nearly done!! To do list: - Frangapanis - Plants for planters - Front fence Re: {Dawn} SE Melb Custom Build - Ever After :) 2614Oct 21, 2017 7:06 pm Its great to see you settling in to your house now dawn and putting your touch on the place What edging did you use? I really like the rusty strips, in my old place we didn't do any garden beds there were already beds out the front with concrete bars in the ground so it didn't hold much in place. I've just pulled out my gardening book to have a look at plants.. unfortunately I don't have much of an idea and no idea what I want to do haha. Where did you do all your research on what to plant!? I also really like your cat enclosure- Do you like it better than a fixed metal cage one? I've been looking into getting something so my outdoor loving cat can go outside. Also do you have a cat door so they can go outside or do you just let them out when your home? I've been looking at what we can do- we don't really have anywhere to let them out where I want to put the future enclosure. Re: {Dawn} SE Melb Custom Build - Ever After :) 2615Oct 21, 2017 7:55 pm Thanks I just used plastic edging in a Jarrah colour from Bunnings. Yeah mums had concrete edging when they moved in, was a bit bleh. Hehe, mostly I just picked pretty flowers I liked, and my mum gave me some guidance on what to avoid and what would work where. I've never had a cat run before, but I like this one better than the metal cages, much bigger and open. More like a section of the backyard is split out and safe for them. Previously Cassie was an outdoor cat, but she's settled into being an indoor cat and she likes the cat run a lot. I have a cat door built into the laundry sliding door, so they can go out whenever they please.. if they could ever figure out how to use it *facepalm*. There are a lot of cat enclosure options, some just go on the fence, some netting goes along the edge of your fence, or you can have a covered enclosure, or a set up. You can get a net set up that is freestanding too rather than a metal one. Re: {Dawn} SE Melb Custom Build - Ever After :) 2616Oct 22, 2017 10:06 am Your garden is coming along so well! The tap thing is such a pain, they seem to plonk them where ever they like. In our estate I've noticed lots of people have them right in line with the front door...hoping ours is more suitably places or I'll be paying for it to be moved because I'm determined to have a front path. Re: {Dawn} SE Melb Custom Build - Ever After :) 2617Oct 22, 2017 6:01 pm They do just plonk them anywhere! Worst for me is I have no tap in my backyard or down the sides of my house, so when I want to water the backyard I have to run a hose from the front tap, through the garage, down the side, and into the backyard. I'm thinking of paying to get a tap added out the back, though don't know how they do that. Re: {Dawn} SE Melb Custom Build - Ever After :) 2618Oct 22, 2017 6:31 pm Theyd have to plumb it from somewhere. We've got three taps and they let us put them where we wanted them. Re: {Dawn} SE Melb Custom Build - Ever After :) 2619Oct 22, 2017 8:33 pm Ill have to have a look into the different types of cat runs We only got one tap on our house its right down the back on the left hand side corner I think I would have preferred it closer to the alfresco area, but atleast it will reach all off the back yard and some of the side with a long hose. We have the water meter with a tap on that at the front of the house that we can use do the front half- ours was put in the middle of the block. Hubby also thinks we have one on the side of the house at the hot water system though Im not sure its one we can use whenever. Went to the nursery today in the rain to look at some plants- I really only paid attention to the trees- Looked at some weeping cherries and some Japanese Maples (I think) for the front of the yard... At my old house we had a second garden tap put into our backyard- we put it to the garage so it could have water but never used it. Anyway they dug a line laid some pipes and covered it back up- Not how you would go about it though you would have to run it all the way down the side of the house, unless they could do it from the house?? Shame they didn't give you a choice on location. Re: {Dawn} SE Melb Custom Build - Ever After :) 2620Oct 23, 2017 8:01 am Yeah, I originally had planned on three taps, one at the front with the meter, one at the back, and one to the side (recycled). Instead I got the one at the front with the meter, and one on the side of the house, 1m behind the electrical box. Its a pain because of the cat run, cant run a hose down that side. I thought there would be one near the back of the house Thankfully my block is small so a 30m hose gets around most of the house. Maples are nice My tree in the front is a red weeping Japanese maple. I also like the weeping cherries. So pretty!! I think you need to pick your trees before you pick anything else.
