Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Sep 14, 2016 12:38 pm Hi all, We are just starting the building process and reading through these fantastic forums I have learnt so much from you all. I would love to get your opinions on what extras or upgrades you wish you would have added, like picture recesses, bulk heads, over head cupboards, shower recesses ect. We are still in the process of finalising our plans and are so excited to be building our dream home on a big beach block in Secret Harbour WA and really want to make sure we get it right, well as close as possible anyway. Thanks heaps Stilettos & Bricks -our Building Journey Blog https://stilettosbricks.com viewtopic.php?f=31&t=85183&hilit=secret+harbour Re: What upgrades, items or extras do you wish you had added 2Sep 14, 2016 12:42 pm ~Shellby~ GJ Bridgewater 203 11/3/2016 - Site Work Started 29/9/2016 - Handover 142 Work Days 6 Work Days Over https://forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.php?f=31&t=80174 Re: What upgrades, items or extras do you wish you had added 3Sep 14, 2016 12:43 pm shellby Awesome Shellby, thanks so much, Will start reading through Stilettos & Bricks -our Building Journey Blog https://stilettosbricks.com viewtopic.php?f=31&t=85183&hilit=secret+harbour Re: What upgrades, items or extras do you wish you had added 4Sep 14, 2016 1:32 pm Full width vanity in the ensuite - the standard design is about 100mm short on each side so adding the extra I should have seen. I would do the same with home theater to kitchen - kinda looks messy with so many different steps in the wall - plus step n walks means more bricks cut and you may not like the wall look with cut bricks needed. ~Shellby~ GJ Bridgewater 203 11/3/2016 - Site Work Started 29/9/2016 - Handover 142 Work Days 6 Work Days Over https://forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.php?f=31&t=80174 Re: What upgrades, items or extras do you wish you had added 8Sep 14, 2016 3:20 pm shellby I would be temped to move the 'gym' wall out to be the same as living/dining - then in the future if you want to extend the alfresco or deck it will seem all streamlined. Great advice Shellby, I have also noted when I asked for the laundry and bathroom to be extended out they have put it under the eaves and not extended them. Can anyone help with what that will look like please? We have our slightly wider double garage on the same side as the al fresco for that reason. Our kids robes are pushed out with no eaves and I'd only do that if a) it's on the dead side as I don't personally think it looks good and b) it's on a normally shaded section of the house. Eaves obviously create a shadow and cut down direct heat exposure onto any windows. Ours is on the dead narrow side with another house next to us, so shouldn't cause a issue. We added a door prior to the kids end of the house... for noise reduction on both sides lol. Thanks ZoePerth, definitely looking forward to seeing what they can do with flipping the front, as it is a custom design im freaking out abit as I have idea really what it will be like once completed. We incorporated pieces from several designs we liked. I definitely think I should extend the eaves out as the sun shines directly on that side, even though it is on the deadside. Thanks heaps for the advice, much appreciated. They should be good to jiggle things around to make it work. We had to flip ours and made it double fronted so the front door in the middle and the study on one side and the theatre on the other, rather than both on the right of the front door. Just altered the hall which we didn't mind but every change may mean a compromise somewhere else! Re: What upgrades, items or extras do you wish you had added 12Sep 14, 2016 7:28 pm I love that you're going to flip the front, will give you so much more useable room. If money was no object the extras I would've added are: Servery window between kitchen/alfresco 31c ceilings throughout or at least the entry/master bedroom. Full height tiling to the bathrooms (we have full height to shower recess and half height everywhere else). Reading through the forum I am so shocked at how expensive it is to have full height tiling & of course it is on my wishlist as well We have decided to do 31c through the living areas, entry, alfresco, & porch. Then added a recess to the theatre and Master. We couldn't justify the added cost to do the entire house 31c unfortunately. One of the displays we looked at had the servery window and it looked fabulous, for $10, 000 though !!! If we desperately wanted one, we could probably retrofit one to our kitchen in a few years time. We were actually moving our 5 boxes of leftover floor tiles last night and saying its a shame we didn't have leftover wall tiles, but again, said to Mr W2T, always something we could do in 5 years time to freshen up the place. Was amazed how much it cost. Maybe see if you can get higher course windows too as they look nice. We didn't.. too many $$$. Oh and check that the ceilings in porticoes and all frescos are not just hardiflex ones, luckily our pre start girl pointed out the portico was down as hardiflex and suggested we pay extra for proper ceilings. Didn't cost much but makes a difference cosmetically. Good point on the ceilings in alfresco and portico, put it straight on my ever expanding list Stilettos & Bricks -our Building Journey Blog https://stilettosbricks.com viewtopic.php?f=31&t=85183&hilit=secret+harbour Re: What upgrades, items or extras do you wish you had added 20Sep 14, 2016 9:52 pm Courses are the height of your brickwork, *most* windows are 25c as in 3 course between the top of the window and the ceiling. When you raise ceilings to 31c, often the Windows remain at 25c so there's a bigger gap. We raised our living room windows, stacker door and kitchen window to 28c and it looks awesome!
