Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Aug 20, 2016 12:54 pm I'm wanting to build a home for a disabled family member who needs to use a wheelchair and have found that there Livable Housing Design guidelines a plan can adhere to in order to suit someone in a wheelchair: http://www.livablehousingaustralia.org.au/ Has anyone built a home that meets the Platinum performance level? Would I be able to pick a plan from a volume builder and have them adjust it to meet the Platinum level? Are there any builders in VIC which specialise in homes for those in wheelchairs? Would be interested to hear of any experiences you've had building a home to meet the Livable Housing Design guidelines! Re: Building a house within Livable Housing Design guideline 2Aug 20, 2016 9:12 pm Decryption I think this system works the other way round - rather than trying to build a house to a standard, the design is assessed to see if it meets the needs. I would think it would make more sense to build that way, as all people with disabilities do not necessarily have the same requirements, or the same likes and dislikes. I would strongly suggest that you talk with an Occupational Therapist - perhaps at your local community health centre or the Independent Living Centre to get some information, and possibly get an assessment of your family member's needs before looking for house designs. Some of the things that may need consideration include whether they need (now or in the future) a hoist system to assist with bathing/toiletting etc, and whether it might be helpful to have one built in. If so, this will have a impact on positioning of the bedroom and bathroom. Widths of door ways, hallways and circulation spaces, and heights of benches and vanities also don't usually take into consideration wheelchair use, and are not always able to be easily changed on an existing plan. Good luck with your search. Variegated Re: Building a house within Livable Housing Design guideline 3Aug 22, 2016 8:25 am Thanks Variegated - will certainly have a chat with an OT.
