Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Aug 12, 2016 10:49 pm My partner and I are just starting out and I'd appreciate any advice/tips on how to find a good builder. We have a block at Taylors Hill and we're not sure if we should go with one of the larger established home building companies (we don't want to end up with a McMansion) or whether to have an architect design our house and then find a builder to take on the project. We don't have family/friends who have built a new home so I can't ask them for referrals. I've read a lot of horror stories in this forum and I want to try and avoid as many of the pitfalls as possible. Re: How to find a reliable builder in Melbourne 2Aug 13, 2016 7:53 pm Hi @Tom_B, great question! We're also in the same boat - have spent weeks visiting display homes & are now toying with the idea of a custom build. So I'll be interested to see what people suggest Re: How to find a reliable builder in Melbourne 3Aug 13, 2016 9:14 pm Hi xvargas, we've also visited lots of display homes but haven't been able to find anything that we both like. . . . we're put off because a lot of the houses at the display centres look very generic. I've been looking into custom builders and I've so far found a couple that have examples of the house styles that we like . . . I'm looking at Nostra Homes, VTM Construction, Lucas Morris builders and Rycon building group. Does anyone used any of these companies? Re: How to find a reliable builder in Melbourne 4Aug 14, 2016 8:53 am Just a warning that whichever builder you build with - custom or volume - there is no guarantee that their work will be reliable unless you keep an eagle eye on them. Just for an example: http://www.starweekly.com.au/uncategori ... lton-west/ We went down the path of getting our house independently designed and then built by a small builder and still ended up with a number of problems which we could have avoided if we hadn't been so naive as to believe we could trust in their "reliability". If you have no building experience my advice would be to choose your builder based on references from past clients (including from at least 5 years in the past) and then make sure you have your own building inspector/consultant to assist you throughout the build. Looking to build a custom 4-br energy-efficient home with a max budget of 750k. If they… 0 22825 custom probably not. Volume, most defiantly, but spec would vary.
