For about a decade now I have been using thermal imaging camera for checking insulation in new homes as well as finding invisible roof and water leaks , dampness etc. Thermal imaging camera is a very sophisticated piece of equpment that very simply presents surface temmperatures on the screen. It is extremely reliable and I can tell you about your ceilings in ten seconds more than another inspector crawling in roof space for ten minutes. I bought mine from USA for 20K at a time when it was a restricted export (you could find and shoot people in pitch darkness) and it was a good investment because invariably it will find hidden defects. Yesterday I inspected four month old home for other issues but I always do a thermal scan and Voila!

Not only were there numerous gaps in badly fitted ceiling insulatio but also there were missing wall batts. So much for spending on double glazed windows for thermal efficiency when your ceiling and wall insulation is a leaking bucket.
If you are building a new home and don't have independent inspector (with thermal imaging camera) looking after you then your builder may become careless. I always warn builders beforehand that I will be scanning at pre final inspection and that they will have to make good even if they have to pull off plaster.
