Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Aug 02, 2016 7:58 pm I am looking for other opinions on a house design that I am looking to build on a 1 acre block
The house is designed to suit our needs, I am a shift worker so need quiet main bedroom. The builder we have been dealing with has been very helpful but am concerned it is going to look odd The block we are building on is an internal block with a fall of about 2 meters overall (hence the house position) Planned a garage one end & workshop the other, a 1.2 or 1.5 meter full length veranda both sides plus an alfresco area Our concern is that the house would look too long & skinny on a large block House, garage & workshop combined is 35.5 meters but only 8.1 meters wide excluding the balcony I would appreciate any feedback or alternative ideas, thanks in advance Re: Long narrow house on a 1 acre block 2Aug 02, 2016 8:24 pm Its a big area and you won't have an appreciation of it being skinny when its built. I built a 20m x 8m house (without the garage or workshop) which was wide enough. (you can check out the layout at this link http://anewhouse.com.au/2012/01/startin ... -design-3/) If it was me I would look to orientate the main part of the house 180 degrees So more of the lounge and three of the bedrooms face north (But leave the al fresco on the north face) The Harder You Try - the Luckier You Get ! Re: Long narrow house on a 1 acre block 3Aug 02, 2016 8:37 pm I think it will look great. What degree pitch will your roof be? Some long skinny houses look a bit funny with less than 22.5 degree roof pitch (my opinion of course). The only thing perhaps to add some character is some variation in the shape to create hips and valleys in the roof. That adds cost though. Our place is 30m x 8ish wide and I think it looks great. Biased of course!! Re: Long narrow house on a 1 acre block 4Aug 02, 2016 8:45 pm scottdreams88 I think it will look great. What degree pitch will your roof be? Thanks for the reply, haven't came up with roof pitch plan at this stage but will be sure to mention it now, the builder did suggest a porch over the front door but we dismissed that as we thought it would look odd & not needed with a wide front veranda, another of his option was to make the garage & workshop 1.5 meters narrower so as to break up the long & narrow look but I wasn't keen on losing shed space Re: Long narrow house on a 1 acre block 5Aug 02, 2016 8:52 pm lookbothways scottdreams88 I think it will look great. It can be difficult to visualise how a house will really look until you get them. At the moment i think your house on the south side will look a bit like this im terms of roof etc Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Re: Long narrow house on a 1 acre block 6Aug 03, 2016 11:22 am I'm on 1 acre, and the house is only 233 sqm in size, but from the road it looks just as big as most in the estate. The roof is also 25 degree pitch, so that by itself makes it look a bit bigger. Owner Building at Jimboomba Woods in Logan City Qld.
