Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Aug 02, 2016 7:55 am We have a contract on an acreage in New Beith, QLD. We have built before but not on an acreage. It will obviously be a different experience. What do we need to know about building on an acreage? The estate is on trickle feed. What sort of water tanks will we need and how much to allow etc. Also, hubby wants to build a shed about 50-60m away from the house (80m away from the road frontage). How much will we be looking at to run the power down there? It will just be for lights and powerpoints. What else do we need to take into consideration? We are looking at building through Coral homes at this stage, but modifying a standard plan into an "acreage style". Re: Building on acreage in QLD. What do we need to know? 2Aug 02, 2016 8:02 am First port of call is council regs, and any regs that your estate outlines. We are in NSW and we had stipulations on the type of septic, min size of water tanks and water reuse. There may also be fire regs to take into consideration. If you are running single phase power down to the shed, you'd have to prove the cost of cable and conduit, plus either trenching yourself or hiring someone to do it. Thanks for your reply We will touch base with the builder hopefully next week. They will be able to tell us what we need. I just want to make sure we are well informed so there are no nasty surprises lol Re: Building on acreage in QLD. What do we need to know? 4Aug 03, 2016 11:18 am Depending upon the size of the block, Logan generally want you to have 31000 litre water tank on a trickle feed system. That may be what they want you to have, consider number of occupants in the house and their water usage requirements. Tank water can be a lot cheaper than town water if you plan things right. Two 30000 litre tanks installed at build time can be a lot cheaper, even if concrete, and partially buried at the same time. Consider looking at alternate sewerage treatment plants, rather than the default ones the builder supplies. It is important to consider electrical running costs on these things. I've got a Worm Farm treatment plant here that does not use any electricity to operate. The supplier told me when he was installing it, many normal HSTP systems consume around $700 of electricity per year, and that was at 2013 pricing. Water pumps also will add to your electrical costs, so choose wisely too. I've got a DAB variable speed drive pump here. Location of your house and shed depends upon your building envelope. Away from the road is a good thing, but everyone will tell you costs of running water, power, phone/internet will cost you more, and it certainly will, but often not that much more than what it would cost you to run it with the house close to the street. It is also a one-off expense, and very minor in comparison to the whole build costs. Owner Building at Jimboomba Woods in Logan City Qld.
