Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Jul 13, 2016 3:15 pm Hi all, Building my first house - past the roof and plaster stage so I've missed the opportunity to add it in, but wondering if anyone else also omitted a gas outlet point in their new build? I've had these in older houses andd figured I'd save the $500 as i'd have reverse cycle ducted and not sure if I'd one day move out of town and rent out my house (so I thought from an investment pov it would save money). Having gone through a very cold winter and being barked at by the parents about electricity consumption in my own room for the little electric heaters - I am kind of wondering if I made a very bad mistake (both from a home owner and an investment rental appeal pov) omitting the single GPO (gas point outlet). It was about $500 or so from what i've been quoted recently (i went to check so i could know retrospectively how much I saved) when talking to my client liaison. Does anyone know if it is alot more expensive to add in a gas point outlet later? I have the main living area with the double brickwork so I would hope any tubing like electricals could run between the double brick - but i am worried now that with gas pipes through the ground etc, how much more expensive or easy is it to add a gas outlet point for a heater? Is it alot more expensive to use ducted RC heating these days with all the newer, more energy efficient aircond out there? Have a feeling I have made a foolish mistake leaving it out. Re: Gas point outlets - did you bother? 2Jul 14, 2016 3:24 pm Consider that the gas feed in from the meter to the outlets (HWS, stove, heaters) is sized by the plumber depending on the anticipated load from the appliances so if you choose to add post handover the pipe may not be a sufficient size. Even though I don't see an immediate need for a gas connection in our outdoor room for a built in BBQ, I've added it with my builder because I don't want to go to the same expense I've had in my previous property when changing from a electric HWS to gas where I had to pay a heap to get the pipe changed over to accommodate the HWS. Re: Gas point outlets - did you bother? 3Jul 14, 2016 4:08 pm We got one for a heater but to be honest it is in the large kitchen/dining/lounge area and I should've gotten one in the smaller lounge room that we end up using more. If I had my time again I would either get more points in or would have gone for more zones in the aircon. We will probably get another gas point put in now but the cheapest option would be run it externally along the side of the house which is not ideal. http://camdenbuild.blogspot.com.au/ by invite only please pm me Re: Gas point outlets - did you bother? 4Jul 14, 2016 4:12 pm pauldab Even though I don't see an immediate need for a gas connection in our outdoor room for a built in BBQ, I've added it with my builder because I don't want to go to the same expense I've had in my previous property when changing from a electric HWS to gas where I had to pay a heap to get the pipe changed over to accommodate the HWS. We did exactly this - added a gas point to our outdoor alfresco for a bbq. Re: Gas point outlets - did you bother? 5Jul 14, 2016 5:19 pm I have all the connections. What was nice was the builder put a gas point in for the cooker hob even though I am using induction. They said they do it regardless incase you change to gas down the line.
