Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Mar 23, 2016 3:46 pm So, after being a bit cautious about starting a thread (seemed this build was never going to happen), it's time to get it all down so you good people can keep up to date with what we are doing. We purchased a house in inner north east Adelaide just over 3 years ago thinking that we would do a Reno and be happy. That was until we got our quotes back for the renovation. It was so much that we thought "you know what, we could knock this house down and build a whole new house for that". So we committed to a 3 year timeline to pay down the mortgage and come up with our design we wanted. Anyway just over 2 years into that wait my wife decided she didn't want to wait anymore and provided our custom plan to Fairmont to quote up asking for it to be at Fairmont homes display spec. We were presently surprised with the price we got back so decided to get the ball rolling and sign up. Since then it has been a grind and the price has increased (and will likely keep going) but we are getting there. "Final" plans recieved this week, with council planning approval already given, and selections booked for late April. Fairmont Homes Adelaide Custom Build 2Mar 23, 2016 3:50 pm Fairmont were clearly keen to get advertising on our place (placed on the 3rd of Feb). It has provided plenty of bemused on lookers as they walk past. Fairmont must have a one sign fits all....

Re: Fairmont Homes Adelaide Custom Build 5Mar 23, 2016 5:00 pm Yeah with the price of renovating, I think you did the right thing, and you get a brand new house with a custom floorplan! I have subscribed to the thread and hopefully might be able to contribute a couple of comments along the way. Re: Fairmont Homes Adelaide Custom Build 6Mar 23, 2016 10:29 pm It sure does seem like renovating isn't worth it. You have a massive house there. Good luck with it all Building a Fairmont Custom in Seaford Meadows Our Build Thread Re: Fairmont Homes Adelaide Custom Build 7Mar 24, 2016 4:57 pm Thanks! Yeah I think a new house with (surely) far less issues and no constraints (other than budget) makes it much more attractive than renovating. I feel a little bad knocking down our old one but the basket range stone front is about the only thing I like about it anymore. viewtopic.php?t=82566 Re: Fairmont Homes Adelaide Custom Build 8Mar 24, 2016 9:13 pm Looks like a nice big spec house, you are lucky to have a sign at your place, we don't have one so clearly we are the mystery builder on our street! I love your plans, the fire provision has tweaked my interest, what have you got running there? Re: Fairmont Homes Adelaide Custom Build 9Mar 24, 2016 9:42 pm heatherkam .......the fire provision has tweaked my interest, what have you got running there? Same, I can envisage cantilevered see through fireplace. Welcome to the custom build club. I'm going to enjoy another north east Adelaide build. Using my LG-G4 to bring you this update. Here is the inspiration for the fireplace. Not 100% sure yet, whether to go 3 sides open or only see through, the fireplace will come later but gas and electrical provision is included.

Like your brick choice! Thanks TraceyWayne. Funnily enough it wasn't what we were thinking of first but loved it once we saw it in person. viewtopic.php?t=82566 Re: Fairmont Homes Adelaide Custom Build 13Mar 24, 2016 11:51 pm Love the bricks too. LOVE metallic bricks. Wanted to feature some similar to that on the front of our place but ouch ... exxy Re: Fairmont Homes Adelaide Custom Build 14Mar 25, 2016 7:10 am That's the fireplace I thought you might be leaning towards with the space you have there. Just make sure the engineering / framers have allowed to span the entire space and aren't using that wall to reduce the size of the trusses. Not difficult for them to do but you will need to request it (I know I'd use it to reduce the truss size if I wasn't told). Would look amazing. Using my LG-G4 to bring you this update. Re: Fairmont Homes Adelaide Custom Build 15Mar 25, 2016 7:27 am I love it, what a great idea and will make everything super cosy in that room! Looking forward to following along Re: Fairmont Homes Adelaide Custom Build 16Mar 25, 2016 7:28 am I don't usually comment on the plans as everyone paws over their plans second guessing everything anyway but the dining room, which I assume will be a very formal space, seems a little detached from everything. It's a bit far from the kitchen and there is no access to a lounge/living to retreat to after the meal. Is there a view out the front window? Could that be bed 4/study? Would the two front rooms sit better with the portico posts if they had two narrow windows which would frame the posts when veiwed from the front? (you can tell me to shhh and go gack in my box if like). Using my LG-G4 to bring you this update. Fairmont Homes Adelaide Custom Build 17Mar 25, 2016 8:19 am Haha twin_dad. All fair comments.
I should have pointed out that Fairmont have named two of the rooms incorrectly. Im not sure if that was for council so I haven't pushed them to change it. The "dining" room will be a home theatre/parents retreat, and the "theatre" will be the kids rumpus/games room (which I'm angling towards turning into a pool room when I manage to get them out of the house in another 20 odd years). The windows at the front were originally twins to do just what you say but my wife was adamant she wanted big single windows to each room as we overlook a park and some of the view may be obscured with the twins. I explained the framing of the posts (and that they would obscure the view a bit) but she was sure so I have given her that one. viewtopic.php?t=82566 Re: Fairmont Homes Adelaide Custom Build 18Mar 25, 2016 8:31 am Ok cool. Ahhh same on the 20 year thing I hope our boys will move out at some stage. If she's anything like twin mum it will be your fault if she doesn't like the windows for letting her win. 😅. I love the dark bricks, but would be too scared to stand by the wall at the height of summer - 3rd degree burns? Hahahaa You made the right decision. We have friends who spent 1.2 MILLION on extending and renovating their old federation style house. The result was 'meh' at best. You could imagine the wonderful new place they could have had for that money. Not that I said they were fools to their faces, but they were fools. You've got a great house to show for all the hard work that that money represents. Win!
