Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Jun 27, 2016 8:55 am Hi all, We are building our first home and have decided that it may be a good idea to purchase furniture well in advance before moving in. So we have a storage locker at about 75% capacity filled with things that we won't be using until we move in as well as flat pack furniture and old keepsakes. I'm wondering if anyone else does this or if we're just crazy? Some have questioned why we're buying things so far in advance while others have said that it's a smart idea as we won't be billed with a lump sum of $$$ when the time comes to move in. We are first home buyers so we don't really have any furniture to move in, apart from what we have purchased and stored away. Obviously, we won't be purchasing electronics and appliances until we're close to lock-up due to the limited warranty on these things. Thoughts? There is so many EOFY sales on at the moment , it's too hard to resist Alex & Darren's Manhattan 23 Ormeau Ridge Follow my build = viewtopic.php?t=80441 Re: Does anyone buy furniture before moving in? 5Jun 27, 2016 9:30 am I work in storage. Good idea if your not being charged too much for the shed. Don't forget to make everything wrapped and packed well. if your storing for more then a few months try and make sure your pop down every couple of weeks and open it up to keep the air moving so you don't get mould. Also you can get the moisture absorbers there great. I'm work in the Gold Coast region so if your down south where it freezing not a big problem about humidity. Good luck always good to be organized! I will probably do the same. Re: Does anyone buy furniture before moving in? 6Jun 27, 2016 9:43 am I thought it was just me haha. We have bought our lounge, rug, island bench stools, new bedroom suite, two televisions, tub chair, new linen and towels, etc etc... it is all being stored in our rental - I have no idea how we have got it all in! I have stopped now though as I want to make sure it all goes together lol. So, we have got the 'staples' but will decide on the feature stuff, nick nacks, once we are in. We have saved an absolute bucketload by buying when things have been on sale. We did buy our new mattress on the weekend just gone too but they will keep it until we tell them to deliver. It was half price due to EOFY sale so too hard to not to. Hoping to be moving in the next few months. My blog: tashandpaul.wordpress.com Re: Does anyone buy furniture before moving in? 7Jun 27, 2016 11:00 am When it comes time to demo and rebuild, my plan is to buy on sale when I can and store it and even told hubby that we will hit the home show expo's and wait for EOY for deals. Im already checking out home theater seating, pendant lights ect and as we are a little bit home display punch drunk right now, yesterday we took a break and checked out external doors and outdoor furniture. We are budgeting for a storage locker during rebuild so plan on renting a larger one for new stuff. Researching split home designs for our KDR downward sloping block Re: Does anyone buy furniture before moving in? 8Jun 27, 2016 12:30 pm We've bought a few light fittings that we wanted when they went on sale. We know which couch we want and will order next time it's on sale for delivery when we've finished building. I probably won't buy anything electronic until after handover - don't want to use up half the warranty before we even plug it in - and I'll only order big stuff if it can be timed for delivery after we move because we really don't want to have to move things twice. We have been getting a few plants going in pots ready for next year and we've picked up some towels that went on sale but nothing bigger. Re: Does anyone buy furniture before moving in? 9Jun 27, 2016 12:48 pm Glad we're not alone!! We have gone a little nuts at Ikea as they had a massive sale back in May. We got a bookcase for $29 and a desk for $99 - really nice pieces too. I look forward to going back after my tax return and getting more things! The issue at Ikea is that there's a quick turnover of furnishings and there are items that get superseded all the time. We have our heart set on a few pieces that we'll be adding to the storage locker. There's something about buying furniture that is very emotional yet exciting for us. Good to know that some electronic stores can hold an order for a couple months. Will definitely look at purchasing some moisture absorbers to place inside the locker. We're on a good rate which includes a man and a truck to help move our items in storage when the time comes to move in. We bought our second couch in January (saved $900) for delivery in June, arrived after we'd been in the house for 5 days. We've gone from a 2 seater IKEA one to a three and a half seater with terminal, it's heaven. We ordered the new bed in May for delivery later but wish we could use bought it way ahead of that from a cashflow point of view but we already had two full units of stuff from my previous apartment and our current one (we moved most of the stuff out for the open home). My inlaws did that and have to have their fridge in the living room Oh no!! That's no good, we have bought off the plan so we know exactly what the alcove for the fridge is. Although this will probably one of our last purchases before we move in! But I have been buying other things, kitchenware, etc. I had the same idea, I didn't want to be overwhelmed with 100s of things to buy when I moved in. By buying it now I had more time to research what I wanted, wait for the best sales, etc. Re: Does anyone buy furniture before moving in? 14Jun 28, 2016 7:00 pm I think it's a good idea, gives you time to plan and even pay as you go, if needed. Best to probably have a plan of what furniture you need, making sure sizes fit rooms with plenty of space around for movement. Think of what features you want to enhance in the room (such as window with view or a shelf display, artwork) to reflect your style. (Because I'm a designer) I love to do visual displays in photoshop with all the furniture, flooring, window treatments, paint colours so it all works well together and has a cohesive colour palette. Yep a bit OTT, but that's just me. Once I have my plan in place (I save a bit regularly for the 'furniture fund') I then buy wisely when on sale. Or even haggle if I'm buying a lot at once. good luck! when's you're move in date? Re: Does anyone buy furniture before moving in? 15Jun 28, 2016 7:20 pm good to see my wife and i are not as crazy has we thought..or has her sisters told us. a year ago we went out and bought a house full of furniture..infact whenever we went to see homes i based my decision if my home theater lounge would fit in any of the rooms i would be able to turn into a home theater lol..and the answer was always NO.. hence why we decided better to build new than make due with used. building in oran park stage 21C killara 26 model with clarendon homes Re: Does anyone buy furniture before moving in? 16Jun 28, 2016 8:30 pm Oh my goodness yes- we are weeks away from moving and have pretty much everything bought/stored prior (the last 2 years). It's been a squeeze in our current house but the bargains we have got are worth it and will make sure your home feels a little "homely" as soon as you're in! Good luck! Re: Does anyone buy furniture before moving in? 17Jun 28, 2016 8:45 pm We (or should I say my OH) have bought a heap of new things and filled up the spare bedroom ready to go once we move in! Off the top of my head, we have new bedding, garden lights, clothesline, a buffet table and a lounge suite on layby, toaster, kettle, a theatre couch and in the coming weeks I'll add a dishwasher to that list! haha My build with FHBD viewtopic.php?f=31&t=78344 Re: Does anyone buy furniture before moving in? 18Jun 30, 2016 12:44 pm abeauthome_blog I think it's a good idea, gives you time to plan and even pay as you go, if needed. We are fortunate to have plans to work off as well as a display home nearby, and it gives us the ability to work out what's going to fit and what's not. I would love to learn how to use Photoshop and draft up our rooms - I downloaded some interior designing software a while back, but it was very clunky to use. Don't worry, you're not alone I'm not a professional designer myself, but I always want to visualise these things and put all our proposed colours together - so much that by the time we had our colour consultations, we were set to go!! We won't be moving in until around June/July 2017, weather permitting. Lol. As others said, its difficult to resist not to buy esp with the EOFY. We have bought the majority of the furnitures we need such as sets of beds and bases, chandeliers and pendant lamps, bedside table lamps, outdoor garden lights, 2 large sofas, another pair of lounge, coffee tables, consoles, ottoman, matching toaster, coffee maker even small things like set of knives, glass containers, under bench bins and even towels. All ranges from 30% to 70% off the original price. Planning of buying plants this weekend. Most of them especially the big ones are still in the shops and will be delivered once we move in towards end of this year.
