Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Jun 25, 2016 9:34 pm Am curious to hear from other Rawson owners as to how they have configured multiple zones on your Daikin ducted inverters. I am about to have handover and during a walk through was shocked to see a single zone thermostat at the stop of the stairs, with a light switch below to turn the two zones on or off. Being technical and having a fair idea how these thing works, I was expecting to see either a multizone controller with a slave controller or a slave thermostat. But not this crude set-up. Apart from needing to walk upstairs to enable/disable zones, turn on/off, set the temo etc, this method has me a little worried the system won't work as it really should. Firstly, it will be impossible to program zones to turn on/off automatically which reduces flexibility. Secondly if we have upstairs off but downstairs on, the system will be using the temperature on the sole controller upstairs to regulate too. So might be cold up there, but warm downstairs, but as the system thinks it is cold will continue to heat. Thirdly I don't think there is a common zone, so what happens if both zones are off. From what I can see the pressure will build up which may effect the longevity of the system. The A/C system with 2 zones was a standard inclusion in this home and the only discussion about it during selections was what areas did we want in what zones. Double story it was a no brainer. But what has been installed, not happy, crude, ugly and as far as I can see almost bloody usless. Shall be raising this with them for sure. PS our system is the standard Daikin 14kw system. Re: Rawson Homes, Daikin A/C Zone set-up 2Jun 26, 2016 8:37 am I have no idea about AC but we are also building a rawson 2 storey and asked for upper and lower zone, so I guess we're getting the same as you. Not excited by the idea of having to go up and down stairs every time we want to switch it on or off. Re: Rawson Homes, Daikin A/C Zone set-up 4Jul 24, 2016 7:35 pm That's good to know. Not in my case however. And having been in 4 weeks now my fears confirmed. It is impossible to keep a comfortable overnight temp upstairs (we live in cold CBR) and then have downstairs warm enough for breakfast. Would like system to keep upstairs @16 until 4am then switch on downstairs @20 to warm up for 630-700 breakfast. Best option is to keep downstairs on overnight and keep bed doors slightly open. Also had an issue that required the Sydney company that is installed it to return. Asked the tech what would happen if I had both zones off but the unit still turned on. His response it could damage the indoor unit so don't do it. So totally bloody stupid and flawed installation. Going to raise it in my feedback email with them as it is rediculous. Re: Rawson Homes, Daikin A/C Zone set-up 5Jul 25, 2016 6:28 pm It would be interesting to know where the system measures the temp from cause there is no point in having the ability to control which zones have aircon if the aircon doesn't know what temp it is in that zone to get to the right temp.. If controller or thermostat max of 2 per system. In my case it is the controller which they have placed at the top of the stairs. Which is completely the wrong place as the stairs are neither a true representation of either the ground floor temp or top floor temp. I have a c bus system which measures temps and I found the a/c controller at top of stairs reads about 4-5 degrees higher than actual temp downstairs and 2-3 higher than upstairs. In fact upstairs around 1.5m away from Daikin controller but around the corner and away from the chimney effect of the stairs. My a/c mate said ideal solution for me is zone controller downstairs and either a slave controller upstairs or read temp from return air to do exactly as you mentioned. True temp for each zone controlled. Re: Rawson Homes, Daikin A/C Zone set-up 7Aug 19, 2016 10:15 am This is good to find. I'm still in the process of waiting for my place to be finished. Our A/C installers decided it would be a good idea to place the extra thermostat right under our return air in the hallway upstairs. After speaking with Daikin that said the whole reason they supply the extra sensor is for downstairs away from the return air as the return air/indoor unit has a sensor/thermostat in it. Why would you measure the same air twice and not measure air in 2 completely different places? After a big discussion with the builder and their a/c guy they agreed to move it downstairs. reading this helps reaffirm what I thought and Daikin told me. Re: Rawson Homes, Daikin A/C Zone set-up 8Aug 19, 2016 10:29 am We ended up getting an extra controller so we now have one upstairs and downstairs, which will hopefully be able to separately get the upstairs or downstairs temps right depending on which zones we switch on.. It makes sense not to locate your controller/control panel on the first floor because you already have a temperature sensor inside the return air vents on your ceiling. It's better to place the control panel on the ground floor instead. This way you have flexibility for your AC to take different temperature readings from two different places. You can then re-program Daikin's control panel to set the temperature according to your liking; i.e. you can tell the AC to take the reading from the thermostat in the return air upstairs or from the control panel downstairs. There can only be one setting at a time: the return air or the control panel or even a remote sensor. It was a $685 upgrade. I wish i did it at the time. The sub contractor of our builder wanted it below the return air grille (dumb idea). I spoke with daikin, they advised to move it away (whole reason the unit comes with it). A/C sub contractor kicked up a stink. I can't select the additional sensor and its all my fault for going against his word to put it in the lazy spot he wanted to when the sensor is on a wire. I'm thinking its a dud or not connected. If I get Daikin out and its an install error they will charge me. I sorta don't want to deal with that incompetence any longer and they certainly won't be servicing it in the future. I thought from your earlier post the A/C subcontractor had agreed to relocate it downstairs? Re: Rawson Homes, Daikin A/C Zone set-up 14Nov 11, 2016 4:54 pm Hi MorningStar, I'm going through the colour selection stage with Rawson and I've been keeping a close eye on this thread. Your comments suggests that the Daikin unit contains a thermostat in the return and in the controller so it makes sense for the controller to be located downstairs in a 2 story home (as the return is upstairs). What I've noticed about all the Rawson display homes and certainly the Metricon ones is that the return is always located above the stair void. Would you know the reasons for this location? Is it supposed to be located in a open area? I've certainly noticed that in single story homes they're usually more concealed in location - being at the end of hallways etc. My concern is that, being located above the stair void, the thermostat would be measuring a temperature that is neither reflective of the ground or first floor. My concern is that, being located above the stair void, the thermostat would be measuring a temperature that is neither reflective of the ground or first floor. I agree with you. Some of the things these builders do in their display homes don't always make sense. I saw a couple of guest toilets in Rawson displays which had no wash basin whatsoever. I mean in regards to hygiene and convenience, surely there are better ways of designing these toilets. So just because Rawson (and Metricon) has this tendency to put their A/C controller on the void near the stairs doesn't mean it's the best thing to do. What we did in our colour selection was to locate the A/C control panel in a location between the kitchen, dining and family area - because these areas downstairs are where we will spend most of our time. We want the A/C to get an accurate reading from this location. Also think about how big your house is. If you think the standard A/C isn't sufficient to heat or cool your house, consider getting an extra zone rather than upgrading to a larger HP capacity. This way you can play with shutting on/off areas you don't really need. Adding an extra zone will cost $450 whereas upgrading to a 18kW or 20kW A/C will cost you thousands more. And one more important thing: I picked up from some people here that the A/C ducts on the first floor could end up being too small for the A/C ducting and so they had to relocate these ducts to the walk-in-robe and it ended up being 2/3rd of their size. Double check everything! Re: Rawson Homes, Daikin A/C Zone set-up 16Dec 27, 2016 10:28 pm You can retro fit this system and it costs about $700.00 will be fitting it to my Rawson build. I have already confirmed with Daikin that it wont impact the warranty and they are aware of the product. Its also half the price of the upgraed Daikin unit and con be controlled from your phone! https://www.airstreamlivingtechnology.com.au/izone/ Cheers, Steve Building the Miami 16 Exec with Modified Balinese facade http://mcdonaldmiami16.blogspot.com.au/ Yes it had a house on it.
