I've spoken to a lot of AC companies & the views were mixed. Some said I can easily add it on now, replace upstairs ducting & patch into existing for downstairs and performance will be fine. Others suggested performance will be heavily impacted using existing ducts. Has anyone been in a similar situation / have a professional position on this? I may play it safe and install split systems otherwise as I don't want to fork out a lot of money for a sub optimal system! I spoke to an installer that stocks Actron, Fujitsu and Daikin today and they can install it post handover. They actually prefer to do the ducts and the unit fully instead of having it half done with the ducts from the builder. This way they can guarantee the work. Not sure how much more efforts it will be, I am waiting for the quote from them. Will let you know how it goes. Re: My Metricon Phoenix in Melbourne 484Jan 05, 2017 9:12 pm So do you mean you just got normal ducted heating through metricon and you are looking to add on refrigerated cooling to it now? I didn't know that was an option! What sort of price have you been quoted from those that said it was possible? Re: My Metricon Phoenix in Melbourne 485Jan 05, 2017 9:48 pm kylz4 So do you mean you just got normal ducted heating through metricon and you are looking to add on refrigerated cooling to it now? I didn't know that was an option! What sort of price have you been quoted from those that said it was possible? No. I got a quote from M to have to refrigerated cooling with a Actron unit. But I wanted to see if I can get a 3rd party contractor to quote and install the same or similar unit after handover to see if it would be cheap than M or not. We opted for splits downstairs only for that reason because we upgraded our ducted heating and it's zoned for 4 areas but if they could re add cooling to existing ducted heating at a reasonable price it may be worth considering Re: My Metricon Phoenix in Melbourne 487Jan 06, 2017 6:49 am Thanks for all the replies. Basically when I uograded my heating unit to ensure it could be zoned and more efficient, I chose a model compatible with add on refrigerated cooling. Naive a little at the time, I didn't realise this meant different duct work would also be required to what was specified as the upgrade cost was already pretty big. So in essence I have a compatible unit for the refrigerated add on to be installed, however the ducts aren't large enough and would at least need to be replaced upstairs - they can't do that downstairs because of access and size of current voids. This concerns me as different contractors have said that cooling requires much larger ductwork to be effective. Basically putting in the add on refridgeration cooling would solve upstairs however I worry about downstairs performance. The quotes I have involve adding the largest single phase unit available, 17kw, replacing all ductwork upstairs and tapping into existing downstairs plus increasing & relocating size of return air. They vary from $10-12k. Or I could go 2 split systems, thinking 8.5kw for down & 7 for up and this would be about $5k installed. But the upstairs cooling would then be very limited to where the split is (master / retreat). I would stick with the 2 split given that you would spent most of your days downstairs on hot days. Then use the money that you would save to install Solar panels. $10-$12K for a retro solutions still sounds pretty good given that M is quoting me for a phase 3 Actron solution for $27K during the build stage. Re: My Metricon Phoenix in Melbourne 489Jan 06, 2017 10:15 am Upstairs is where it will be hottest, ground floor should stay fairly cool if the house is kept closed up and as long as it sits under the first floor part. I don't think it would have to be super strong in that area to be effective!? We have upgraded to zoned heating and 4 star unit but I don't know if it's compatible for add on later!? That's what I thought too - it still can get warm downstairs though given all the glass in the open plan area but nothing like upstairs which felt like an oven the other week & because it's so well insulated the heat takes time to escape!! Re compatible units, the fact yours is 4 star and zoned is a good starting point. It needs to be an extra air unit, ie a mod with a + at the end. Check with M what unit they've selected, presume a Brawmar around 30kw so similar to mine. So confused on what to do! Do you find it bright enough with the number of down lights you have? Would you add more if you had a chance to do it again? Was going to upgrade it to six in the living and dinning area. Re: My Metricon Phoenix in Melbourne 496Jan 06, 2017 2:53 pm dulie Jason, How are you finding the lighting around the house? Can't say we've had any issues, the light is generally good in bedrooms and living areas - there's plenty of them. The one change I would make is adding downlights to the ensuite as we just have a main 4 in 1 light switch and whilst it is OK, over the shower isn't overly bright in early morning when I'm getting ready for work / late at night.
