Browse Forums Building A New House 1 May 18, 2016 5:38 pm Hi guys, We are in the early stages our build & undergoing the mammoth task of choosing a plan we like. Would like to know opinions on the pros/cons of including an activity room/area in the plan. We are on a tight budget, so I'm not sure I can justify the extra $ to allow for this - help please! Re: Activity room 2May 18, 2016 7:06 pm Hi Lulu16 I think the answer would depend on how you think you will use the space. Is t a space you think you'll get value out of? Or will it be a room that no one uses? We have 2 just turning teenage boys and a 2yo, so this room will be the gaming room and hang out room for our older boys and then we have the other living areas for us and the 2yo. So for us its a need, but for someone without kids or having kids wouldn't really need it. ~Shellby~ GJ Bridgewater 203 11/3/2016 - Site Work Started 29/9/2016 - Handover 142 Work Days 6 Work Days Over https://forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.php?f=31&t=80174 Re: Activity room 4May 20, 2016 8:05 am Do you have kids? We have two, and I'm in the bedrooms-are-for-sleeping camp, so an activity room is a must for us, as I also hate having toys in the living room! As they are little now, it is a playroom, and as they grow it will evolve to have a desk for homework, couch to relax on, we've got provision for a TV... At that time the activity room was more a play/activity/games room for my son, now he's nearly 18 and it's more a living area for him. My only advice is make it a decent size so it can evolve. 2.5m x 3m is ok as a littlies play room, but that size would struggle to work as a TV area....especially with half a dozen 6 foot plus teenagers as we often have here. It's worked so well for us it's a must have in the next build. Re: Activity room 6May 20, 2016 10:35 am I think for most families (including my own) you'll find that you get good use out of any additional living spaces. Before we had kids, our focus was on buying a house enough bedrooms for the family we planned on having. Once the kids arrived though it was clear we needed extra living spaces so we built a design with three living spaces and use them all daily. http://camdenbuild.blogspot.com.au/ by invite only please pm me Re: Activity room 7May 20, 2016 4:01 pm As the others have said, if you have kids an activity room is a huge bonus! We had ours set up in our last house with the computer, bookshelves and heaps of the bigger toys. Re: Activity room 8May 20, 2016 4:09 pm +1 towards having one. I always think it's better to do it rather than always regret not doing it. We have one we refer to as the sitting room, it's got a spare TV in it at the moment but we foresee it being a space for my son when he's older, so that he doesn't have to be locked away in his room to get some space. Even for studying, with a little desk, etc. My Hamptons build (completed): viewtopic.php?f=31&t=63370 Moved in Wednesday 11th Dec 2013 Front landscaping completed June 2016 Re: Activity room 9May 20, 2016 5:20 pm We are building a house with kids activity room, it will keep our kids bedrooms less cramped with toys & an area they can watch their own tv. When kids come over to play, they have a space of their own. If you can afford it, do it. Re: Activity room 10May 21, 2016 10:13 am Thanks for all the fantastic responses. For me it would be an area utilised by my toddler & any future children. More as a dedicated toy storage/play area at this stage, rather than trying to store it away & take up space in bedrooms. I appreciated the comment Frye regarding size- I hadn't actually though put a lot of consideration into allowing it to be utilised by older kids down the track.
