Alternative to double glazing

So, we couldn't afford to double glaze our windows.

I just wanted to know what products are out there to improve the insulation properties of single glazed Windows.

I know heavy curtains are one but I'm looking for something that's going to help during the day when the curtains are open.

My first priority is getting something for the rumpus. This will be our "toy room" until our kids grow up and the windows on this room face south. So no sun will be warming the room during winter.

I've been hearing ads on the radio for enerlogic window films. Just wanted to know ur thoughts or any other suggestions. Thx

I don't know about that particular product, but one alternative is to use blinds or curtains that will let light through. An example is the Verosol 815 "transparent" fabric, which they rate at giving a U value of 2.9 together with single glazing, which is a bit better than the rating on that film. Some of the less transparent materials will insulate better. You could fit this on a roller blind inside the window reveal, while still having the thermal curtains operating behind it.

Another option is to fit additional glazing on the inside of the existing window. You can buy a sliding window without reveals, and fit it to the existing reveal on the inside, while the original window stays on the outside edge of the reveal. This technique is more suited for noise reduction, but also provides thermal benefits.

Hi, i had a similar dilemma. I researched all the different options and for my situation smart glass was the better option (western windows). Double glaze works very well for heat conducted through the window but does nothing for Solar heat gain. On the other hand low-e type glass work really well on Solar heat gain and is better than normal glass for conductive heat loss/gain.
