Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Apr 03, 2016 1:48 pm Hi all, Over the last few months of reading through peoples building blogs I've noticed that quite a few decide to utilise the services of a building inspector during construction. We are located in the Shoalhaven (south coast of NSW) and I haven't heard anyone down here doing it. So I guess I am curious as to A) why you did/didn't decide to get a private inspector B) if you feel it was worth it C) if you are near the Shoalhaven, who did you use? I'm interested to seeing the different perspectives. - Kym - otherwise known as Kym - Re: Building Inspections 2Apr 17, 2016 3:41 am Hey mate, We used one at every stage. Was just over 2k. We used a large volume builder, built relatively cheaply. As such their trades can be questionable, partly due to the fact the company pays them very little. We used an independent inspector who is well respected, the tradies new him. After the build, I think it is what he stopped from happening rather than what he found. We advised the company from the start we were using an inspector. I firmly believe their choice of trades sent to our build was influenced by this. Some may say 2k is better spent on a kitchen bench or the likes. I wasn't always around so wasn't able to police the build. I'm glad I spent the 2k. Our tradies, most of whom I've never spoken to before, all know an inspector is due and mention it to me when I do speak with them. So everyone's on the same page, tradies know they'll be hauled back if their work isn't to standard. Re: Building Inspections 4Apr 17, 2016 7:16 am This is the problem with the industry as a whole. The quality of your work shouldn't be determined by whether or not somebody is inspecting it to meet the lowest possible stadand (the NCC). Using my LG-G4 to bring you this update. Re: Building Inspections 5Apr 17, 2016 11:00 am Building inspections is just another added layer of costs the battlers have to endure..why 1. The quality of workmanship is not up to standard because of shortage of trades & Skills, poor details, on site knowledge, etc 2. Low on site wages & lack of supervision means most trades are learning on your job 3. Council building depts are happy to hand out building licences but don't want to deal with compliance & non-compliance matters 4.Why aren't Clients/home builders equipped technically and legally to query what the builder does on site...?
