Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Mar 19, 2016 8:43 pm We are doing a knockdown rebuild in City of Bayside (Melb). The demo company apparently found asbestos. Our neighbours have made mention that they should have been notified in advance re:demo & also notified about removal of asbestos. Can someone please clarify? Re: Neighbours 2Mar 19, 2016 9:07 pm Hi Beanie13, we're doing a KDR in bayside too (haven't done our demo yet) but my understanding is that you can advise your neighbours but you're not obligated to. We need report and consent from our neighbours so they will know that we are going to knock down. Re the asbestos, again I don't think you need to advise anyone if it's being removed by professionals. What did council say? Re: Neighbours 3Mar 19, 2016 10:16 pm We knocked down our house. Also bayside Melb but a little south of you. Our demo company knew there was asbestos In the eaves and put up a sign on the temp fence stating 'asbestos removal in progress'. My neighbours also told me that they knocked on their doors and told them what they were doing, advising that they should shut doors and windows but also saying that it was very safe. Don't know what the legal requirement actually is. That's just my experience. Good luck. If you didn't know about it, hard to let them know though. I'm in neighbouring Kingston and have had an asbestos roof replaced and also the eaves and bungalow cladding removed. For the roof I didn't mention it to the neighbours, but I think the company put a barrier on the footpath. For the eaves etc I did let the neighbours know because that is what I would like in the same situation. However, realistically any KDR will likely have asbestos and if removed correctly it poses no danger. it depends on the natural ground level, if they excavated their boundary wall needed to be built as a retaining wall.
