Browse Forums Building A New House Re: New Building Seaford Meadows SA 421Sep 01, 2017 8:14 pm I love those tiles, but I'd trip over the edge every time I walked in the pantry (just like when you step on an escalator that's not moving!). My husband or kids would find me sprawled on the floor shouting 'I'm still falling!' seriously though, I love seeing the builds where people have been brave enough to break with convention. My brave patch will be my laundry splash back - just need to convince my husband Also, I love your laundry design, the toilet in the laundry is a master stroke. We are all gardeners in our household and we've designed a bigger than norm laundry to act as a mudroom. But alas, the extra toilet was just out of budget. Re: New Building Seaford Meadows SA 422Sep 04, 2017 3:24 pm Shame you couldn't have one... I find that always having an available toilet is one of the keys to a stress 'less' existence. Especially as I get older. We had a house by the beach, and the loo and shower extra in the laundry was indispensable., no sandy trails! I don't do the beach that much now, but as you say - the gardening and other things. If I'm spraypainting, or stripping furniture, it will really be convenient! Not to mention if I've got our friends kids fingerpainting or crafting in there, then they don't have to get out of thier aprons. And if I'm painting, then I don't have to leave the 'zone'. What splashback are you having? I wanted face huggers from Alien etched into the glass, but hubby wouldn't go there. Tell your hubby, he might be glad of your choice, then. Re: New Building Seaford Meadows SA 423Sep 04, 2017 4:50 pm Hey Jaya, I've been going through your thread and your kitchen looks very similar to the shaker style one I've designed with my kitchen guys although my island is going to be a slightly darker colour. I'm also thinking of Bianco Drift and London Fog for my island bench, and would love to see a photo of how yours turns out if that's possible! Thanks My build blog here Re: New Building Seaford Meadows SA 424Sep 04, 2017 7:38 pm Hi BOFN, Hopefully the stone goes in tomorrow, after many delays - I'll put a picture up on Wednesday evening, if it does... I didn't have trouble choosing stone, as I don't like the terazzo look (growing up in the 70's, terazzo only ever says 'public toilets' to me! lol). I also don't really like marble, or granite (excepting black granite, and I don't like black in the kitchen). However I liked Bianco Drift as soon as I saw it - the particles were so small, like sand, and the veining there is looked like sea foam. I really don't like the veining in marble as such. I don't mind a small piece, like coasters, but not a whole benchtop; so I never even looked at those. So it was no choice for me really! They've brought out some new ones for 2017 that I just had an email about. I think if I'd seen the Rugged Concrete first, there may have been a struggle. I like the blotchy, industrial look ( which I think would have played nicely off that clean Shaker style), but hubby woud never have gone for it. It's a bit dark, too. I like the Turbine Grey, but not to live with IYKWIM. How did you narrow down your choices? I'm just being nosey... Re: New Building Seaford Meadows SA 425Sep 05, 2017 12:15 pm Guess what, the toilets in my office building are terazzo style! Hehe I actually haven't narrowed my choices I'm generally very indecisive but these two appear to be the ones I have on my mind most of the time so I think I'm going with them. I actually love the marble look, and love the veining of real marble (like the real calcatta) but the price is a bit too dear at the moment, and the veining of the ones that Caesarstone or Quantum Quartz has seem a bit too tame (or too faint or too obvious veining) for my liking. It doesn't help also that I don't intend to have white cabinetry - they are light oyster grey, and the side where my oven/fridge/entrance to pantry is natural oak. I'm actually not a fan of rugged concrete - I find it a bit too 'rugged' (lol) for the transitional/hamptons look I'm going for. So a picture of how bianco looks like on your kitchen would be a great help! I've been trying the visualiser but to be honest, bianco looks totally different in person than on the images! (in a good way) My build blog here Re: New Building Seaford Meadows SA 426Sep 05, 2017 12:41 pm Good old terrazzo toilets! When I walked through the F0rmat display, I was horrified because the kitchen bench looked like Roselands Shopping Centre toilets to me! hehehe... I know people like it - it's not bad, but the inevitable connection is there for me. That's why I refuse to have the same benches in the bathrooms as the kitchen. Two seperate areas of life! hahaha... I think that this thread had some pics viewtopic.php?f=31&t=81755 The BD tends to pick up whatever colour it's put by. Looks whiter on white, grayer on gray, browner on a brown/grey. I went to the Caesarstone place out by Largs Bay here in SA to look at big pieces. They are nothing like the tiny sample I had, but it definitely picks up what's close. Re: New Building Seaford Meadows SA 427Sep 06, 2017 4:12 pm Stone delayed another week, what a surprise! At this rate, we'll have hit the next millenium....I'll be ashes in the wind before we move in. Re: New Building Seaford Meadows SA 428Sep 06, 2017 5:34 pm How annoying. A week feels like a year when building Re: New Building Seaford Meadows SA 429Sep 07, 2017 9:40 pm Actually, I find the time's going too quick now! We just put the order in, and paid the deposit for, the plantation shutters and bathroom blinds. I'm going to meet the landscaper tomorrow, who also does stormwater connection and concrete, garden beds, the works. One stop shop, love it... no right hand being unaware of the left hand! Had my fill of drainage plans, and service locations today. I contacted the SS, he said they may still be able to make the first week of October for handover. Not holding our breath, however. Hope everyone is going well out there! Re: New Building Seaford Meadows SA 430Sep 07, 2017 11:44 pm Getting close. House across road started too Re: New Building Seaford Meadows SA 431Sep 08, 2017 7:51 pm JayaJaya Shame you couldn't have one... What splashback are you having? I wanted face huggers from Alien etched into the glass, but hubby wouldn't go there. Tell your hubby, he might be glad of your choice, then. Who did you order your shutters through? We've had a couple of quotes but they seem to vary considerably. Re: New Building Seaford Meadows SA 432Sep 09, 2017 12:21 am We got them through Floors Direct out at Salisbury - they cut us a deal cuz we've ordered our floor with them. Go talk to Calum or Elly, they can probably do you a ballpark figure via email if you give them how many windows and what sizes. They'd be happy to send someone out to quote, at least. Your hubby sounds as tame as mine! I wanted face huggers all along the splashback, and then my Mum suggested one of those 3-D glass layer pictures over the cooktop, where it's nothing from a side view, but you get the full Alien coming at you with the arms, jaws and drool when you stand directly in front. Would have cost the earth, but I'd have really enjoyed that. Have to make do with the Alien cookie jar I bought. *sigh* Hubby would have had nightmares, tho. I've been making little paper clay Alien eggs to go in the pantry, in a carton. I want to do a face hugger up in the corner by a top shelf - I've gotta work the little tackers in somewhere! I love the things, so much fun. I'll give him a 'Free hugs' sign. Mind you, hubby bought me the giant skeleton spider that sits in our living room. He does posess some whimsicality - although it was probably because he knew I'd love it. I think I know which Morrocan tiles you mean, in those washed out, ashy denim tones. They're lovely! I've seen them around.... If I'd had a different style house I think I'd have done the bathrooms in those... it would be like an Arabian style bath house feel then... ooh, that looks lovely in my mind's eye! Who's gonna spend more time with the splashback? If it's you, then.... Re: New Building Seaford Meadows SA 433Sep 11, 2017 5:20 pm JayaJaya Stone delayed another week, what a surprise! At this rate, we'll have hit the next millenium....I'll be ashes in the wind before we move in. I hope the stone's going in this week! I for one am excited to see a photo of it, especially with your silkwort cabinets, which is a colour I'm considering too My build blog here Re: New Building Seaford Meadows SA 434Sep 11, 2017 6:16 pm I think I did the silkwort in half strength? Hang on I'll look - nope, it's full strength - lighter than it seemed in the colour chip. Which is good, because I wanted fairly light. I Ummed and Aahed and then just said, what the heck, I think. I checked the dulux colour encyclopaedia to get the RGB values of the greys - I tried to get ones that were almost equal and therefore neutral, and not likely to throw strange colours in different lights. Haven't heard yet, about the installation... Landscaping has been estimated at the budget we planned for and so has the outdoor kitchen. 'Well done hubby' at guesstimations when we were budgeting! The outdoor kitchen people are great - custom poured concrete tops, AND concrete cabinetry, INCLUDING doors! Dunno how they do that, but I like it! They're thin, so I'd have thought that carbon fibre re-inforcement additive stuff? I'll go see when they're doing it, they're in Seaford Meadows - how awesome did that turn out! Location, location, location! I know that fibre stuff is used for small concrete castings... interesting. Swan coatings haven't answered me about why they think the polyurea floor will be no good. Either they don't know, think I'm a crank, or don't need any money. Or all three. I just asked for information as to why, so I could make an informed decision. They weren't impressed, apparently. Oh well, no job for them. They could have convinced me to have another coating, but didn't bother... I always think it's fishy when they don't want to tell you why... I wanted to go with them too, as they are a south Aussie family owned outfit. Re: New Building Seaford Meadows SA 435Sep 12, 2017 10:55 am Stone goes in today! Huzzah! ***** “Ti-ra-la-la-i-tu! I gloat! Hear me!” ***** A million credits to anyone who knows that reference... name the author! If you can name the book, double points! Pictures of the stone if I can snavel any today... Re: New Building Seaford Meadows SA 437Sep 13, 2017 7:50 am Hah! I say, Hah! After months of delay, they came earlier than the SS said, and I missed it! I got a couple of misty pics through the windows... bugger! I'll wait until my tiler goes down there and get some better pics... sheesh! It's hard to tell, because the plastic cover is reflecting, but it's nice and light... picking up the grey and white nicely from what I could see. It also ties in nicely with the blackened bronze handles. I'm happy because you always see silver handles with the grey white scheme, and I wanted to tie it in with my Indian brasses, so it worked well. I'm wanting to see it closer, because I asked for a 5mm radius on the top edges, but it looks smaller from a distance. Not gonna change it now! I realy like it, though - hope they've done it all correctly... I'd hate for the one and only swirly stone that I can stand to be cut wrong after all this! Itching to use that lovely clear island! Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ on a lighter note, this is the style of concrete we want to go for on the outdoor kitchen counters below... We are getting a nice curved top, and one of the doors will be curved to match it... so the whole thing will be concrete, including splashback, and the SB and the doors will be the opposite to the counter colour - white concrete with the grey cells through it. I went and looked at their factory yesterday - awesome! They have a lot of really nice stuff happening there, some beautiful concrete tops in the works. They like to do custom, and unusual things, so we were rapt with that. Pulled about a billion lemons (an entire crateful) off the lemon tree they are huge from all the rain! And there's a tonne of new ones forming. Lemon butter, lemon cake, Moroccan preserved lemons, lemon/lime marmalade, apple lemon pie -waaahhhh! I want my island! waaaaaaaaah! Re: New Building Seaford Meadows SA 439Sep 13, 2017 6:34 pm Ohhh even though the pic is misty, it's still looking fab! I miss the mature lemon tree at our last place, I'm a sucker for all things citrus, especially lemon curd Re: New Building Seaford Meadows SA 440Sep 13, 2017 9:49 pm Hahaha... Marshall, you have just volunteered to recieve a bag of lemons! Check your doorstep tomorrow... There's so much on the tree. Also Building nanna... check your doorstep, too! Reminds me of when I used to chase people down the street with bags of chokos. I may just rock up to the new house tomorrow and start chopping lemons on that island. I was doing that today - no cusséd room! Had a nice apple/lemon pie at the end of it, though. I'm gonna try and move the trees - I wasn't going to, but I don't think the tenants will be too interested in pruning properly so as not to damage the fence etc. If they drop dead, well, they do... however citrus are more amenable to a change of scenery than most fruit trees, so we'll give it the old college try.
