Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Jul 23, 2010 5:09 pm We are in the process of trying to build a house at Manor Lakes in the western suburbs of Melbourne. We have got as far as having a plan drawn up by a building designer and the plan requires the crossover to be moved from the northern side of the block to the southern side. My question is are we better off to hire a contractor ourselves to move the crossover before we go to a builder or are we better to leave everything up to the builder? So far the best quote I have received is about $2,200 for the crossover relocation plus $800 - $1,000 for a heavy duty pit lid. I have actually had a lot of trouble even getting on to a concreter who will answer their phone or return calls. Has anyone gone through this themselves and have any advice? Re: Moving a crossover in Melbourne's west 2Jul 23, 2010 5:24 pm Hi Liliana, I am not sure how much research you have done regarding moving a crossover. Is an existing crossover already in place? If not, can you approach the developer to see if they can relocate it. Are you aware that you need to apply to council to have a crossover moved, and that you also may need to remove the existing crossover? The link below regards crossover permits on the wyndham city website. You can download the document which explains all the conditions for crossovers. http://www.wyndham.vic.gov.au/building_planning/engineering/crossovers Michelle House - Lockup completed 23rd December 2011 - Painters are in!!! https://forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.php?f=31&t=37261&start=0&hilit=Blaxland Re: Moving a crossover in Melbourne's west 3Jul 23, 2010 5:53 pm Hi Michelle, Thanks for your reply. There is a crossover there already and I've spoken to the council about moving it. I know that it is alright with them so long as we put in a heavy duty pit lid and remove the old crossover. I have also spoken to the developer but I don't think they can redo the crossover for us because we need a council permit and in order to get that we have to supply council with the name of the contractor and a copy of their public liability certificate. The developers have given me a number to get their subcontractor's details but have also said the subcontractor might not be interested in a small one-off job. I think the only way to go is for us to do it privately or have it done as part of the build. I just don't know which would cost us less. Re: Moving a crossover in Melbourne's west 4Jul 23, 2010 8:31 pm Hi Liliana, I haven't had to move a crossover before (I checked with the developers that it was in the correct spot for the home I was to build before land development started). However, if it helps I have a pricing list of some common upgrades with NBG (list current as at April 2010). They mention it costs $2550 to provide standard concrete crossover (does not include removal of kerbing etc). Not sure if this is any help, but it may give a rough idea of what you are likely to spend by getting done as part of the build. Thanks for your quote from NBG; it sounds similar to our best quote from a private contractor though because we have a stormwater drain less than a metre away, we'll have the added expense of a heavy duty pit lid. Re: Moving a crossover in Melbourne's west 6Jul 24, 2010 6:14 pm We have to move our cross over as it was done for all properties beofre anyone built. Our issue is we are building a double story and the neighbour on one side has already built. We would have to be 2m from memory on that side away from their house, which wasn't going to work. So we flipped the house and no neighbour on the other side yet. We had to get the quote and then take it to the Wyndam Council who were very quick and they approve it to be moved. I'm sure the quote was closer to $5k for removal of the old one and new one to go in. Oh and $400 the council charge us to remove the little tree on the kerb. Re: Moving a crossover in Melbourne's west 7Jul 24, 2010 6:25 pm We are having a new crossover laid in Melton, and our old one removed, due to the engineering plans being altered. Firstly we applied for a change of crossover to the Melton Council, and they then sent an inspector to review the site (as our crossover will be over a stormwater drain). Within three weeks, the permits were back. Our council wont actually lay the new drive though. The developer was asking for $5000 to lay a new crossover and demolish the current one. So we then asked our builder for a quote, only $2000. Which includes the reconstruction of the curb, the current crossover removed and a new crossover with storm water grill. Dear J.K. Sincerely, Anonymous Re: Moving a crossover in Melbourne's west 8Jul 24, 2010 6:39 pm Thanks for the replies folks. We went up to the block today to have a good look. It seems to me like a very straightforward job. There would be no kerb to reconstruct and we miss the tree so it really would only be a matter of cutting out the old crossover and putting in the new. From your replies I'm feeling like around $2,000 from a private contractor is a fair price. We are not actually over the drain, just next to it so we need the pit lid. Re: Moving a crossover in Melbourne's west 10Dec 07, 2016 10:21 am Hi Clair, As the concreters we got to do our crossover did a very poor job on the paving we asked them to do later on down the track, I don't feel happy recommending them to anyone. What I realised, however, is that since the Wyndham council inspects all crossover work before the concrete is laid, it is pretty hard for a concreter to muck it up - not the case when they are doing work for you alone and so they don't care what they do. Just go through the ads in the local paper or try asking the council if they have anyone they can recommend. Re: Moving a crossover in Melbourne's west 11Dec 09, 2016 11:46 pm Thanks Liliana! I have a vacant land and need to relocate crossover which already has council approval, am wondering if the crossover can be done only after the house is built or must I get it done before building? Re: Moving a crossover in Melbourne's west 12Dec 10, 2016 4:27 pm It can be done after building - probably preferable in case they crack it with their heavy machinery! We did ours after the house was built. Just be careful where they put your gas and water meters. Re: Moving a crossover in Melbourne's west 13Jun 26, 2018 6:04 pm Hi, I've deposited for land which will get titled next year June 2018. Due to a rear crossover in corner plot Simonds, Carlislehomes and Metricon confirmed they don't have any design for the lot. Can someone kindly advise me on the the crossover relocation process.
