Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Feb 06, 2016 6:38 pm Hey guys. Where can I go for info on the above? We're hoping to sell up and go rural in about 5 years. We want to reduce our mortgage as much as possible, so cheap land and a cheap build will suit us. I know there are cheap container and kit homes but finding it hard to find rough prices etc for what we want (hoping to get 4 or 5 bedrooms). We're also interested in any alternative methods of low cost building, thanks to too many episodes of grand designs 😂. Happy to put in the labour ourselves. Re: Kit, container, and unusual budget homes 2Feb 07, 2016 11:05 pm How big a block of land? If you have access to the appropriate soil & are happy to put in the time & effort (a whole lotta time & effort), then rammed earth construction (or something similar) may be an option. Note, due to it's quite poor insulation levels, a simple rammed earth wall may not meet building regs - an exterior wall with high thermal mass & low insulation levels could lead to a very uncomfortable dwelling. So you might have to investigate hybrid rammed earth walls, with insulation on the exterior, or within the walls, or limit rammed earth walls to the interior of the dwelling, where they wouldn't be exposed to the elements. I'm no building expert, just thinking off the top of my head.
