Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Feb 04, 2016 9:45 am Hi, just wondering how hard it would be to change a hinged door to a cavity sliding door? I realise that there would have to be internal mechanisms within the wall to support the door, but not sure if it is possible, without major changes (i.e. removal of plaster etc?) One side of the wall is going to be tiled (ensuite shower, but the 'end wall' which won't get much water on it), the other side is a bedroom wall. We haven't even got a slab yet (next week hopefully) but the builder has said that we can't make any changes after going to site. My blog: tashandpaul.wordpress.com Re: Hinged door to sliding door after build has started? 2Feb 04, 2016 10:21 am Certainly possible if you have enough room but it will depend on how willing the builder is to make this change and how much he is going to gouge , I mean charge you. Here is an example about 14 or 15 photos down... http://scottshousebuild.com/2012/05/ext ... ows-place/ Stewie Re: Hinged door to sliding door after build has started? 3Feb 04, 2016 10:35 am Thanks Stewie, the builder won't actually let me make the change as the frames have been ordered. However, my father in law is a builder so he could potentially make the change for us after handover, I really just wanted to know if it was a possibility. Alternatively we may leave the door off altogether, just have a doorway, and close the bedroom door if we have visitors. I think the hinged door is going to drive me bananas, I don't know why I didn't think of it earlier. I realise changing it later will be messy, but may be worth it. Thanks! Much easier to do than cavity. viewtopic.php?t=81011 Build thread viewtopic.php?f=31&t=81011 Re: Hinged door to sliding door after build has started? 5Feb 04, 2016 11:02 am Build thread viewtopic.php?f=31&t=81011 Re: Hinged door to sliding door after build has started? 7Feb 04, 2016 11:36 am have you got enough room on the wall to put a barn style sliding door? these look really cool - you can use just a normal painted door, just that style of track
Re: Hinged door to sliding door after build has started? 10Feb 23, 2016 10:58 pm I have had bifolds for wardrobes before and you would be surprised how little room they take up when open. We are putting ours between bedroom and WIR viewtopic.php?t=81011 Build thread viewtopic.php?f=31&t=81011 Re: Hinged door to sliding door after build has started? 11Feb 24, 2016 8:48 am There are two options I can see. One is to put a cavity slider in. That will involve cutting the wall open, and making a double-width doorway in the frame, and then inserting the cavity sliding unit, and re-plastering. You may had to re-do the tiling that goes over that section, although with some care you may manage to preserve the lining on one side. it's going to be easier if you can make sure there's no plumbing or electrical in the section of wall that needs to be removed, so hopefully the light switch is on the other side of the doorway. Otherwise, you can add a cavity slider unit to the side of the existing wall: just pull the plasterboard off one side of the wall, and butt up another 70mm frame in addition to the existing one. the downside of this is that your wall will get thicker and take space out of the room. During construction, try to take good photos of the frame construction in this area, so that if you decide to change the door, you know what to expect. Thanks for your thoughts.
