My firm belief is that regardless of theory, in practice the waffle pod slabs are a lot closer to risk edge cliff than conventional raft slabs and I would avoid them whenever possible. Whatever cost and operational advantage waffle slabs are to the builder it is not passed on to the owner and instead owner takes up the much higher risk of failure for no benefit at all. I have just come off pre plaster inspection of a large 2 storey home KDR on a P site and despite my warnings to the builder from the beginning there are no temporary downpipes installed, so I am just collecting evidence as it may be needed later.
