Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Jul 22, 2008 5:11 pm Hey guys,
Need your opinions on our floor plans for the ensuite/WIR. Below is our original plans, but due to having to comply with estate rules, we've had to move the vanity unit to the other wall to add a window (dont get me started on that topic! stupid corner block) So, we can't have a door that opens into the ensuite now, because it will hit the vanity unit. http://i351.photobucket.com/albums/q460/toybrd/orig.jpg Anyway, PD have given us two options on how we can go forward. Option 1: means that we only have one door for both WIR and ensuite, and finacee is concerned about the "openess" of this option http://i351.photobucket.com/albums/q460/toybrd/opt1.jpg Option 2: has a slide cavity, but we lose out on shelf space (because we cant have a shelf on the wall that the side cavity goes into) http://i351.photobucket.com/albums/q460/toybrd/opt2.jpg What do you guys think? I'm tempted to go with the orig plans and just not have a door for the ensuite...but a bit worried about not having a door there... What does everyone else have to the ensuite? door or no door? Other options are more than welcome!! Thanks guys Thuy Re: Opinions on ensuite/WIR plans? 2Jul 22, 2008 5:18 pm Why not put a swinging door on the original plan? I'm not a fan of ensuites without doors - steam getting into clothes worries me.
By the way - are you Vietnamese? (I'm guessing with the name - though recently I asked a student this and she was Chinese but with a Viet name!) I am desperate for some great muc noi thit - was our fav dish in VN After 4 years - we're in! Re: Opinions on ensuite/WIR plans? 3Jul 22, 2008 5:24 pm What an annoying position to be in
I think I agree with you in leaving it like the original plans and having no door. We are adding a door to our ensuite but our plans means it is much more open than yours, I don't think it would really matter having a door on yours because the ensuite wall/WIR provide privacy in your ensuite anyway. You could also just add a privacy lock to your bedroom door, so no one can get in when your having a shower anyway. The option with the sliding cavity would cut off shelving like you said and this is never a good thing The other option might work but I would be interested in how the tiling on the bathroom floor would work being so open near your WIR Hopefully someone else can help you out - if it were me I'd just leave it like the original with no door Maybe the cheapest option too My karma ran over your dogma Re: Opinions on ensuite/WIR plans? 5Jul 22, 2008 5:26 pm Just on what Stonecutter said, would the door on the WIR prevent the steam getting into the clothes?? I really have no idea on this!!
I always leave my ensuite door open and my WIR open, I wonder how much damage I have done!! My karma ran over your dogma Re: Opinions on ensuite/WIR plans? 6Jul 22, 2008 5:26 pm Can they not just put a cavity slider in the original plan into the wall between the ensuite and WIR...or am I missing something?
BTW we will have an open ensuite, but some distance from the WIR. We'll just have to make sure the extraction fan is good! 'chelle We have a hand-over date...15/10...but I won't hold my breath! http://people-in-glass-houses.blogspot.com/ Re: Opinions on ensuite/WIR plans? 7Jul 22, 2008 5:28 pm 'chelle Can they not just put a cavity slider in the original plan into the wall between the ensuite and WIR...or am I missing something? BTW we will have an open ensuite, but some distance from the WIR. We'll just have to make sure the extraction fan is good! I thought this also - but came up with it will open up onto the vanity, so not much room to squeeze in - thats why they moved the cavity slider down a bit in the 2nd option. Paula Re: Opinions on ensuite/WIR plans? 8Jul 22, 2008 5:31 pm Oh and I suppose you can't put shelves where the cavity is either so you still lose some of your WIR. 'chelle We have a hand-over date...15/10...but I won't hold my breath! http://people-in-glass-houses.blogspot.com/ Re: Opinions on ensuite/WIR plans? 9Jul 22, 2008 5:35 pm Hey guys,
thanks for the responses, i knew i could depend on u!! stonecutter1309 Why not put a swinging door on the original plan? haywgl would the door on the WIR prevent the steam getting into the clothes?? 'chelle Can they not just put a cavity slider in the original plan into the wall between the ensuite and WIR...or am I missing something? aiya, so frustrating stonecutter1309 By the way - are you Vietnamese? I am desperate for some great muc noi thit - was our fav dish in VN Re: Opinions on ensuite/WIR plans? 11Jul 22, 2008 5:40 pm Newbies um..there is no door to the WIR...its just open.. Could you ask for a standard door to be put on the WIR though and for the ensuite to be left open? My karma ran over your dogma Re: Opinions on ensuite/WIR plans? 12Jul 22, 2008 5:45 pm haywgl Newbies um...there is no door to the WIR...its just open.. Could you ask for a standard door to be put on the WIR though and for the ensuite to be left open? Rachelle, i guess i could take back to finacee...but i really liked the idea of having two basins...hheheh i hate st0ck|and and their stupid rules.... Re: Opinions on ensuite/WIR plans? 13Jul 22, 2008 5:46 pm Newbies Yep i'm viet...well born here, so i really consider myself an aussie..hehe ...u cant really get muc noi thit in restaurants (are u talking about squid stuffed with mince meat?) cos this dish is more a family/at home dish....hehehe I'm an ABC (Aussie Born Chinese) - so I know what you mean! Yep - I mean the stuffed squid. Easy to make at home? I have some recipes for it that I googled and am thinking of trying it. (Sorry to go OT!) After 4 years - we're in! Re: Opinions on ensuite/WIR plans? 14Jul 22, 2008 5:46 pm I dont know about the rest of the world... but I really don't like "open" ensuites. I love my wife and all, but I really don't want to be in the bathroom while the other is in the bedroom if there is no door... or vice versa I might add!
EDIT: Just to go OT some more... my wife (also Thuy) is aussie born vietnamese as well, we just came back from visiting all her family last week Ate soooo much good food! Alan and Thuy in Melbourne Building a second time! Re: Opinions on ensuite/WIR plans? 15Jul 22, 2008 5:55 pm Newbies -- we have a door on our WIR and it doesn't really impact the space at all, I actually like it as it shuts off all the mess in there
I just put hubbies clothes on the side that the door opens onto, he hasn't complained as yet My brother is also dating a vietnamese girl, her name is Thi, gorgeous girl and a great cook My karma ran over your dogma Re: Opinions on ensuite/WIR plans? 16Jul 22, 2008 7:39 pm Newbies,
What about going with option 2 and putting on a swinging door that swings away from the vanity? If it swings back towards the shower, you will have to walk around it, but the advantage is it'll be hard to walk in on someone sitting on the toilet. OR Move around the stuff in option 2. If the shower goes where the vanity is the door can swing hard against the wall that adjoins the bedroom. (the ensuite is 2000, the shower is 1200, leaves over 2000 for a 720 door to swing into. The toilet can go where the shower is, with the cistern against the window wall. The window moves to the right to allow for the shower. The vanity goes against the robe wall. This wall is 2780, take away 720 for the door and it leaves you over 2000 for the double vanity. Actually with this way, the door could be on the shower wall and swing against the robe wall. then the robe could have it's own door if you prefer. I hope you can follow what I'm saying. Wish I could post stuff!!! Jo Edit: did this in a rush last night anf forgot to add, you would have to reduce vanity and shower a little to give proper access through doorway. I leave you to fend for yourself, figure things out yourself. Terrence Malick Re: Opinions on ensuite/WIR plans? 17Jul 22, 2008 8:10 pm hey joles, thanks for the suggestions! unfortunately, we cant move that *stupid* window, cos it faces the side street, and estate wants that window to be equal distance with the dining room window...
had thought about your other option, but fiancee reckons that will be a pain having a door open to the middle of nothing... grrr haywgl, good thinking about the wir door...heheh only problem is fiancee is an incredible neat freak, so would not let me have mess anyway what do u guys think of option 2, but instead of having the slide cavity slide to the right, I make it slide to the left? that way i can put the shelf back onto the wall that it is currently missing. is it possible for a slide door to slide that way? or is it really impracticle? hehe stonecutter1309, to be honest, not that keen on that dish...hehehe but good luck if u decide to make it!! hehe toast, i noticed that ur wife was named thuy too..hehe...thuy is most common name in the viet community...hehe....its like the john smiths....hahhahahah...i pronounce my name "toy" though... something different Re: Opinions on ensuite/WIR plans? 18Jul 22, 2008 8:18 pm I am interested in more detail regarding your developer's wishes.
We are going to build on a corner block (with no street fence) and currently have the powder room on the secondary side. However, ours would not be large enough to move the vanities. What change did they require? Is it the location of the window or its height that is a problem? I hope we dont have the same issue. BTW my favourite VN food is Bun Thit Nuong. Corner block, lake view, custom design Re: Opinions on ensuite/WIR plans? 19Jul 22, 2008 8:22 pm I'm with you Toast, not a fan of these open ensuites: I've been married for 22 years but still prefer to do some things by myself.
I prefer DH to do some things by himself too Condensation on clothes if the ensuite is open to the WIR will also be a problem. Another problem will be noise from the bathroom if one of you is sleeping in and the other gets up early - hairdryers, electric shavers etc. This may not effect everyone but DH and I both being shift workers it would definetly be a problem for us. Thuy, I agree, these pedantic estate requirements can be a pain, I have read on here about some weird rules. This must be one of the weirdest, I mean what does it matter if windows are not equal distance apart??? Must be so frustrating when house plan is fine for you in original design but then has to be changed because of red tape. Re: Opinions on ensuite/WIR plans? 20Jul 22, 2008 8:38 pm tell me about it Helyn, drives me insane!! originally fiancee wanted to but the block next door, but i insisted on the corner block, cos it just looked nicer...boy was that a big mistake!!! and to make it worse, fiancee wont let me live the decision down!! >.<
Scribe, basically our original plans had the ensuite window above the full mirror (above the vanity unit). From the outside of the house, this is what the window looked like (the vertical window at the very top)...Sorry about the pic, its the only one i could find on my comp. Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ So, our developers wanted the front side and the side side of the house to be "consistent". So we had to change to comply....I'm not sure about your plans, considering its a double story, you mite have more leeway....just make sure u read through your estates design guidelines... hehehe and yes, i agree with everyone,...i don't particularly want to see/hear my fiancee doing his business either what a way to start our marriage!!! hahahahah hehe Scribe, my fav is pho.....mum cooks the best Thanks for the suggestion. The space between shower and sinks was too tight. I agree about the toilet location. So I have tried two other options: The lower one is… 3 6238 the step up is 30mm and wanting it to be flat . how much does the concrete have to be lowered .we plan on removing bath and lenghten shower and adding seat. the old bath… 0 11962 |
