Browse Forums Building A New House Re: Anyone else regret building a new home? 34Jan 09, 2016 7:42 pm OllyOllyRumbah I saw the sample in the flesh. Was told it was called Silver Spoon. So not only was the wrong colour installed, it's also from a different range so I know nothing about it - warranty, quality etc. The wrong carpet was installed because the colour consultant called the dark grey carpet I selected Silver Spoon but Silver Spoon is a light brown coloured carpet. Found out that the 30 Day Replacement guarantee the carpet company offers doesn't apply to me because I ordered it through my builder. If I had ordered it on my own I'd be covered by the guarantee which says you can have it replaced if you don't like it for any reason. My builder claims I got a good deal on the carpet but I didn't. I rang the carpet company today and found out if I had ordered the carpet that has been installed on my own I would have paid $2800. I paid my builder $2744. As far as I'm concerned $56 isn't a good deal especially if it means I'm exempt from the replacement guarantee. My builder is carrying on as though I saved a lot buying the carpet through him. Has me concerned because he considers the discount I got such a big deal - did I pay more for the dark grey carpet in the deluxe range that I had selected but have had a cheaper carpet installed??? By the sounds of it, you saw a dark grey carpet and the colour consultant called it silver spoon. Did you verify the dark grey carpet was actually silver spoon at any point? The undersink piping does look sh*ddy, however based on the bracket it looks like a cover is placed over it? why were the pipes ripped out? On a different note: This forum says the word s h o d d y is forbidden? I mean huh! Re: Anyone else regret building a new home? 35Jan 09, 2016 7:50 pm I can see your frustration with the carpet, I'd be furious. Did you take any photos on the day by any chance? I know I was all excited and wanted to remember what colours I'd picked for everything so I took photos. If you did too it might give you some leverage in your discussions with the builder. Re: Anyone else regret building a new home? 36Jan 09, 2016 8:09 pm Hi THX I made the mistake of trusting the consultant at my colour selection appointment at my builders head office. I triple checked the carpets name and left it at that because it was the ONLY grey carpet I had to choose from as all the rest were grey. And the name Silver Spoon made sense to be a grey carpet. Also, no samples are given out for carpet selection. The consultant made numerous other mistakes that I had to deal with. These included the wrong front door and the wrong kitchen sink tap. I picked these up early (before signing off) but she argued and was quite rude. Then after the selection was signed off on she told me the toilets I had selected and had been signed off on in the final contract had to be changed. Not because they weren't readily available but because their supplier would not supply them. And I was not allowed to get them myself at Bunnings despite the final contracts being signed. Also, the builder forgot to tell the painter about the different colour facade. I saw that they the wrong colour had been used which meant I would not meet covenant requirements. The colour consultant was very disorganised. Always telling me something hadn't been signed when she hadn't even told me it needed to be signed. Every week it was always something new. The plumbing has already been ripped out once because the shroud didn't fit over it the first time. In my opinion, using plywood in plumbing seems not too high a quality of work. I requested a drop waste but this request has been ignored. Plus the tiles meant to be above the wall hung sink are missing and the mirror is huge. I was told it would be small and nowhere does it state the size. Re: Anyone else regret building a new home? 37Jan 09, 2016 8:13 pm Bjhf I can see your frustration with the carpet, I'd be furious. Did you take any photos on the day by any chance? I know I was all excited and wanted to remember what colours I'd picked for everything so I took photos. If you did too it might give you some leverage in your discussions with the builder. I can't find any photos. The appointment was so rushed and the 'consultant' just seemed to get annoyed the longer I took to make decisions. Plus, I assumed she wouldn't make so many mistakes. Honestly, it just seemed like she wanted me out of there. Re: Anyone else regret building a new home? 38Jan 09, 2016 8:47 pm Sorry your carpet experience has been so bad. We've had this problem too. they have put us through sooooo many staff. We are on our 4th site supervisor and about our 6th Office Liason lady. You try and sort things out but they just don't care - they just say well it wasn't me I don't know what you are talking about. I started taking so many photos it wasn't funny and following up all meetings and phonecalls with emails to the point where our 2nd site supervisor had a go at me in front of the tiler as " all your long winded emails are blocking up my ipad". I had only ever written to the liason officer ( he said all emails automatically get sent to him) even if only her name is on the email. I brought it up with her and she swore blind that it wasn't true. What can you do. We've been having a tiling problem since July of 2015. The tiles I chose were wonderful - love them. However - how they were to be laid is not the problem. I suspect because we were put through sooo many people it got missed - I followed it up and was told to wait for the meeting with the tiler. So I waited. Never happened. They called me to site about a different screwup of theirs and I saw the tiles already on the wall - exactly how I did not want them. Slapped up the wall in straight lines. Now all my tiling ensuite/ bathroom and laundry looks like every public toilet in every shopping centre in Perth. Turns out when there is no direction printed on the job sheet - the tiler on the day makes the choice. Just lovely, you'd link they'd call and just check - esp seeing as my mobile number was on all the sheets of instructions. So now that is another thing to get fixed - which they don't want to as they keep telling me who will pay????? That's what I asked and paid extra for. I've only had a few mistakes with the tiles and that's mainly because I met with the tiler before the job was to start. Did you pay extra for how the tiles were to be laid? I had to pay extra for the brick bond style but did so because I chose subway type tiles in my bathrooms from floor to ceiling. Re: Anyone else regret building a new home? 40Jan 09, 2016 9:04 pm Those colour selection appointments can be problematic. I like both carpet colours, but I'd be super annoyed if the wrong colour was installed! That being said, I saw my builder's carpet samples 7 months ago, got one photo, told him I want to go with the dark brown as per the photo.. I have no idea what its called, and I've not been offered to see the sample again (the sample seems to have disappeared). This is probably a good lesson for me, I better check that out before I sign the contract.. I had a similar issue with roof tiles, but was caught right away. I was shown a sample, (only had 2 choices!!) I was told it was Twilight. A week later the consultant emailed me to say 'opps, sorry that's not twilight its gunmetal'. I probably wouldn't have noticed after they were installed as the colours were quite similar, but its not the point. A survey must’ve completed by a certified surveyor.
