Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Jan 04, 2016 6:56 am What are your opinions on wardrobes - do you think a small walk in for each room is a good idea or space wise not much difference to a built in? Price wise have you been quoted very differently? I was thinking all WIR but now I'm wondering if space wise they actually give much more wardrobe space than a built in would. Plus I'd assume them to cost a fair whack more. Re: Walk in Vs Built in Wardrobes 2Jan 04, 2016 7:14 am We have both. One BR with walk in which is quite useful - but others with normal. Our main has a bigger walk in. BUT - thinking of another thread - if you can do a walk in - maybe consider a smaller ensuite too - not tiny - but shower/toilet/sink ... very useful. Re: Walk in Vs Built in Wardrobes 3Jan 04, 2016 9:00 am Horses for courses, but the way I see it is that walk in robes take up much more floor space in your house than built in robes. For some this would be a major issue, particulary with the tiny blocks that seem to the norm these days. If you have a big house, then walk in robes wouldn't be an issue, but I doubt you'd be able to do the same in a smaller than 300 sqm house (other than WIR and ensuite in the master bedroom). As Saint Mike mentioned, if you can do a WIR in the other rooms, consider a small ensuite as well. Personally I would only have WIR in the master bedroom. Make the other bedrooms a reasonable size with built in robes, and perhaps find a better use for the floor space your house consists of.... i.e. larger kitchen, bigger garage (with decent work space so you can leave the car/s parked in side), turn that media room in to a larger and real home theatre. Re: Walk in Vs Built in Wardrobes 4Jan 04, 2016 9:11 am The advantages of walk-in robes are that the doors are cheaper, and they take up less wall space in the room. The downside is they can take up more room for the walking area and are sometimes have quite space-inefficient designs if they are small. It all comes down to the specific design. If you can run shelving down both sides of the walk-in area for a decent length, it can be quite efficient. Re: Walk in Vs Built in Wardrobes 5Jan 04, 2016 12:56 pm We are having WIR's in all our bedrooms. Our house design initially had 3 bedrooms which we changed to 4 so we ended up with bigger bedrooms plus the WIR robes. I like that WIR's are out of the way and in our case left us with more useable wall space. Re: Walk in Vs Built in Wardrobes 6Jan 04, 2016 3:42 pm Probably my other thread Mike! We have 2 acres and will build a one story long house - best suited to the block. I do want the bedrooms roomy but also think if we want to rent it out in the future (20 years or so) they'd be advantageous as we live in a holiday area. You can check them out on my blog https://bellaviabuild.wordpress.com/[/quote] Walk in Vs Built in Wardrobes 10Jan 04, 2016 6:03 pm I don't think a WIR would increase return on a holiday rental. It comes down to $ really, do you want to spend that money on floor space for wardrobe or spend that money elsewhere. You've got the space so it really depends on your budget. See, if you put walk ins that increases the scale and finish of the room really. Therefore, I think to make it seem in balance and to an appropriate finish you'd need to ensure the bedroom itself is of a decent size. So across 3 or 4 bedrooms you're talking about a fair bit more floor space overall. If you put 2700 ceilings and do floor to ceiling robes on a decent wall you can get a good amount of storage. That's what we decided to do. Of course the upper section will not be so accessible but will be useful say for winter clothes, blankets and less used items. You could also use some of your hallway space for decent linens with nice doors, again what we've decided to do. We've got a bucketload, official term, of linen storage down our hallway.
