Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Dec 31, 2015 11:23 am Hi everyone, (I hope this is the right spot for this post) Have been reading the forums for months now, we are hoping to finalise our land purchase in the next 18-24 months (long story). We have the block in mind, just waiting on some things to happen first. This forum has been a great source of information thus far and hopefully will continue to be! Our block is sloping from back to front and has fantastic views at the front of the house. We have been busy looking at other houses, websites (houzz, this one), magazines etc to help get ideas. This will be the first house we build and hopefully the last. We aim to live in this house until we die (!) or until we have to move out due to old age etc. Our idea with the home is to build it in a way that will allow us to update it down the track as the situation and funds warrants - for example we want to leave space for a future lift and also we want to be able to install a kitchen down on the bottom level in case our elderly parents need to live there one day, or even further down the track - if we want to live upstairs and have a carer downstairs. So whilst we don't have the money for some of the features now, we want to be able to install them down the track as required. We have even put together some plans which I have attached, grateful for feedback / suggestions! Nice to meet you all! I think it's great you plan to only have the one house to see you out. We would have liked to have done same but couldn't afford for where we wanted to live (suburban beach). We clocked up 25 years in our first plain Jane house and now moving into our just-built 'hotel' lol. This one's taking us out til the end though. Where are you building? Re: New Member - Hello! 3Jan 01, 2016 6:50 am We had a list - and it takes time - but its nice to slowly cross off the items you have planned for. Re: New Member - Hello! 4Jan 01, 2016 10:14 am hi TomCat, We were lucky enough to get a base of the plan from another house we loved, and have done some modifications to it using Paintbrush! There is so much we don't know though - we will probably meet with a designer / architect to discuss what we're after and see what they think too. Houzz has become the new website to waste time on, we've got loads of ideabooks for each of the rooms with what we are after (or at least what we think we are after). Just looked at your post thread, are you in your place now?? We live in Canberra, by all reports a very expensive place to build! Re: New Member - Hello! 5Jan 01, 2016 8:44 pm Great! i dont see many CBR builds here. Yeah Houzz is fantastic. In Adelaide we expect to pay $1,000 per square metre. Is Canberra higher than that? My husband grew up in Canberra and is curious about why it would cost more ... it's not 'remote' so doesn't understand why. We're kind of in 'transition' ... Moving in but doing stuff too (fixing up our current house to rent out) Re: New Member - Hello! 6Jan 02, 2016 1:51 pm Hmm not sure - but everything in Canberra seems expensive. Question - when people talk about cost per square metre, do they count every single square metre of the house? Including in my example - garage space, under storage, covered outdoor area, pool etc? What is in and what is out. I know it is an ordinary question - but what would my square metres be do you think based on the plan? Re: New Member - Hello! 7Jan 02, 2016 10:49 pm Yes, every single square metre. That includes everything you singled out except pool. I dont' know about how big your house is. Mine is 350 square metres and in comparison, yours looks a lot bigger, but looks can be deceiving If it's drawn to scale you can figure it out. Re: New Member - Hello! 8Jan 03, 2016 10:58 am Thanks again TomCat - good to know that yours is 350 square metres based on your plans. Ours is probably a little bit bigger than yours (I think the plans are to scale but I don't have any measurements, I probably could do some rough calcs though), but hopefully not too much - if we didn't have the underneath area it would probably be less - but with our sloping block it makes sense for us to use this space in such a manner, and "future proof" it as much as possible. Cheers! A question. Im in Queensland and building a new home. We managed to reach practical completion 6 weeks ago but we haven't heard any date for handover yet.
