Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Dec 22, 2015 6:26 am Hi all, After a bit of advice from those who know more about building then I do (which isn't much at all). One thing that is bugging me about our ensuite is the exhaust fan being installed at one end of a double shower, rather than in the centre. Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ When I asked our SS about it, his reply was "It has to be installed there as the timbers from the trusses are in the way so it can't go directly in the centre" I found this picture that I took of the frame and I think there is space for the exhaust fan to go in the centre, but husband reckons it wouldn't be exactly in the centre which would look worse than being at one end. What do you think? Am I being taken for a ride so the SS doesn't have to have the fan moved? Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Merry Christmas everyone! Re: Room for exhaust fan? 3Dec 22, 2015 10:10 am It could have been installed at the centre between the two end walls of the shower, though maybe not central with respect to the side walls. The location of the trusses has no bearing on that. There is less room between the centre trimmers than the two outer ones, but even if they were the problem, they could have been located differently. Sure, the SS is telling the stories to try to avoid lots of time and money in rework. But then, often this sort of details is poorly defined at planning stages, partly because the exact locations depend on the roof timberwork which may not be known at the time. The final details tend to be left to the discretion of the trades, and the communication isn't really there for them to know the detail of which things the owner will be interested in. However, aesthetically I think what the builders have done looks quite a bit better than if it were at the centre, and it should function fine there. So I personally would be keeping it there. The cost if you push to have it moved is that you'll have a patched ceiling above the shower, and it will likely delay the completion of the house. These form a cost to you even if they do agree to move it, so you have to balance that up against whatever benefit you get.
