Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Dec 16, 2015 3:18 pm My build is getting close to finish and so is my neighbour's house at the back. I keep meaning to get the fence quotes for the backyard but with everything going on I've yet to do this. I get to my site to see their builders have put up a back fence. Their builder is one that includes everything. Their backyard is a lot higher than mine and so I had to build a retaining wall which is about 80cm in from my boundary. I was told to do the fence last. The back fence sits back from the retaining wall. I was a bit shocked to see the height of the fence, it's about 4 feet tall and my neighbours will easily be able to see over it. Now I know there is the retaining wall but that is about 80cm in on my block. Both sides of my block are fenced with retaining walls and there is a massive drop to the back fence. My question is, can I insist on a taller back fence for privacy reasons? I will pay for half of the fence, I always expected to do this. I just want a fence with a bit more privacy. I'd post a photo but can't figure it out. I regret not getting around to the fence quotes sooner. Re: Minimum fence height??? 2Dec 16, 2015 5:02 pm There might be council rules about heights, try checking with them or check with your estate? My estate mandates 1.8m high timber paling for all boundary fencing (which is great coz no one can argue with that). Re: Minimum fence height??? 3Dec 17, 2015 8:36 am Check your land contract, the fence requirements should be in that. It can be increased but it requires both sides consent and council approval. Not sure why your retaining is 80cm in from your boundary but it may be because the retaining is in from the boundary that they have taken a different measurement. I would still expect it to be higher than what you have described. They should have contacted you about the fence as well. My land is 260m2 (10m x 26m) located in claymore NSW.
