Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Jul 18, 2008 5:35 pm Well, when it rains it hails and today I received a 'friendly' call from our tile supplier to inform us that the feature tile we chose is not available at the moment and that we will have to choose a different one.
Well the problem is that there are no other tiles that are the same size or tone in colour. I am FURIOUS! Spoke to the SS and he told me "I suggest you choose another, because we are laying them on Tuesday" I was angry and told him that I refuse to choose another and I am happy to wait, even move in without tiles. He said if we wait for the tiles to come, which could be 3-8 weeks then it will a hold up handover. Well I'n not holding handover, the supplier is holding up handover. I am not interfering with hand over as I was told they were available when we did the tile selection. I cracked it and told him that he needs to sort this out or else I am happy to wait. Then he said he didn't know what to say. Since when do you find out three days before laying tiles that they are not in stock? And give your client two days to choose new ones. I have paid $1500 extra for these tiles(paid three days ago) and I want them What would you do???????????? Re: We can't have the tiles we ordered? WHAT????? 2Jul 18, 2008 5:56 pm Bloody annoying. How long ago did you pick your tiles out? Does the supplier have no stock anywhere in the country? Its hard enough getting tiles right the first time without this nonsense.
One of my worries is that we had to pick our tiles just after we signed our contract, which was 12 months ago... I fear that in the not too distant future, a few weeks before handover, we'll get a call that basically says - "you know those tiles you picked, that every other colour in your house references back to, sorry, they're not available, can you come in tomorrow and pick out something else." I guess God didn't use subbies... Re: We can't have the tiles we ordered? WHAT????? 4Jul 18, 2008 7:01 pm Miss81, this happened to us - the porch tiles and the bathroom frieze tiles no longer in stock and we had to pick alternative ones.
In our case they had become deleted lines so no choice even about waiting. After some negotiaion, we were able to pick tiles with another supplier, pay for them ourselves and get a credit for the ones they could no longer supply. Fortunately we were able to find alternative ones we liked. I think this problem is relatively common as they don't order tiles until they are almost ready to lay them, usually the customer did their selections months ago and sometimes the tiles have gone out of stock in the meantime. Re: We can't have the tiles we ordered? WHAT????? 5Jul 18, 2008 7:23 pm It seems that this is not uncommen, when we went through all our selections recently we were told at EVERY step that this was a possibly and even a tender and contract there was a specific form to read and sign that made us aware of the process and our rights should this unfortunate situation arise. Did your builder not go over any of this with you? If not then I'd be miffed also! Re: We can't have the tiles we ordered? WHAT????? 6Jul 18, 2008 8:01 pm FYI also, if the tiles are for the floors in your wet areas (bathroom, laundry and possibly kitchen) you can't get an occupancy certificate without those areas tiled. Some safety thing apparently.
Unfortunately, if they were your choice of tile (i.e. from a supplier other than the builder's usual supplier) then you're just going to have to choose a different tile (even if it is from a different supplier) or the build will be delayed and be considered your fault.... sucky I know. I think I'd be heading out this weekend to source some new tiles! Although, I would've thought your builder would be a little more understanding about it! pretty rude! We asked whether that's alright, as we remember reading here too that we can't get an Occupancy Cert without it... they said it's fine. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Built the Nevada 42 Next project - landscaping! He has no room for compromising, however on our contract is notes that if the tiles are "unavailable" then we will need to reselect. I wonder what "unavailable" is defined as. Our tiles are delayed, in transit, on the boat, being shipped... yes I am really trying to find my way around this The other option would be instead of having the tile in the horizontal mosaics then we can have them in the exact colour but squares. Hmmmmm, or then I suppose this is the chance to change my colour??? Re: We can't have the tiles we ordered? WHAT????? 9Jul 20, 2008 3:26 pm Wrong tiles (in fact, not wrong tiles, but wrong batch). We returned the tiles, and the supplier was very helpful by upgrading me to the new but better tiles.
If you like what you picked in the first place, stick to your gun. or demand the supplier to upgrade the tiles ... Re: We can't have the tiles we ordered? WHAT????? 10Jul 20, 2008 6:07 pm if it's only the feature tiles can't they just tile the rest and do the feature tiling when they are available? WHAT????? 11Jul 24, 2008 9:46 pm Well after getting very angry at the SS, and sending an 'angry' email to head office, we got a lovely call from our CSR today informing us that our tiles will be here in about 2-3 weeks.
This just goes to show that some people are lazy! And that sometimes getting angry works in your favor... not that my husband agrees Thanks mate. Yeah good points!
