Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Nov 25, 2015 6:13 pm We have a large void where our internal stairs are and we've just learned that there needs to be allowance for expansion on the walls at the point where the ground level meets the first level. Our builder says he normally finishes this with a strip of architrave all the way around. I would prefer a seamless look from ground floor to level one ceiling. He mentioned that there is an L-shaped or H-shaped joiner that can be used that may look more subtle. Anyone have any thoughts or opinions? What does your house have? Do you love it, hate it? Would you do it differently next time? Looks a lot better than what I am imagining with architraves running all the way around, especially as we are having grey walls and white trims Re: Expansion joints in stairwell - options? 4Nov 26, 2015 8:00 am Any builder that uses an old styled beading like architrave etc should be shot. Very unprofessional. I bet your builder wouldn't have it in his house! Stewie Re: Expansion joints in stairwell - options? 5Nov 26, 2015 11:10 am Thanks Stewie, I thought I was being fussy! What's the alternative? What should I ask for? Re: Expansion joints in stairwell - options? 6Nov 27, 2015 7:44 am A plasterboard expansion joint - something like this... http://www.criterionindustries.com.au/p ... joint.html Fill the gap with a flexible sealant, paint the plasterboard and sealant and you'd barely know it was there. Stewie Re: Expansion joints in stairwell - options? 8Dec 11, 2015 7:26 pm Just a quick update - Thanks to everyone for your help. We ended up getting a plasterboard expansion joint and it looks fantastic, much better than the skirting/cornice would have looked. We were charged a vary of $150 but well, well worth it I think!
