Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Nov 11, 2015 2:20 pm Hi all, A friends house built 10 years ago didn't come with window locks on sliding windows (just latches), whereas ours comes with keyed locks. What is the purpose of them, does it increase security from the outside, or does it just make it make it harder to get out of a window once inside? Also I'd be interested to know if anyone who has had them long-term actually uses the lock. Re: What is the point of sliding window locks? 2Nov 11, 2015 2:45 pm I think the main use of them is to get lower insurance premiums, as some insurers will give a discount if all windows and doors are lockable. Some designs allow them to operate as a vent lock, to be locked in an open position, but not open enough to allow someone to get through. Both. A really tried and true way to gain access to a house is to smash a hole in a window to reach in and unlatch it to open it, then climb in through the open window. By adding window locks it just makes it a bit harder to gain access since you would have to smash out the window and climb through broken glass which is harder and noisier. It also means if someone gets in, it's harder for them to get the stuff they want to steal out again especially if you also have deadlocks on doors, so home security these days usually involves both making break ins harder, but making getting back out with stuff harder too. Some insurance companies require window locks or screens and deadlocks for doors for contents insurance because it reduces the chances of someone breaking in and you making a claim on insurance. Re: What is the point of sliding window locks? 4Nov 21, 2015 10:08 am As piscean said, it's to make it harder to enter and leave by smashing the window and opening it. We had a break in foiled by our window locks. The offender smashed the window but was unable to open it and gave up (actually broke the plastic latch trying to pull it open). We were left with a broken window which is better than loosing property from inside.
