Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Jul 16, 2008 3:04 pm We are trying to come up with a facade for our custom design.
Our builder has assured me that lightweight materials on the first floor would not have significant difference in quality over bricks. The price is the same for lightweight & render compared to brick. I like the look of render or other material rather than brick, but if it comes to long-term problems I would prefer to stick with brick. Does anyone have any experience with strength/durability issues with lightweight material (whatever they are)? They allow for a bit more design creativity and variety too. Re: Lightweight & Render vs Brick 3Jul 16, 2008 6:35 pm We bought an approximately eight year old house and the upstairs attic/study is clad with Hardie's Primeline Weatherboard (http://www.jameshardie.com.au/Products/ExternalCladding/PrimeLineCladding/). It's the only room upstairs and is therefore exposed to weather on all points of the compass - I had a looky up there on the weeked - it's in pefect condition - apart from bird pooh..... how they pooh without a perch is beyond me.....kamikazee dive! mmm....donuts Homer Simpson 1956- Links: Site Costs Ready Reckoner | H1 Addiction Medical Advice | Château TDL: The Backyard Re: Lightweight & Render vs Brick 4Jul 21, 2008 8:35 pm Our builder has almost convinced us that all brick would not look as good as some render.
I was looking for Boral Range 1 bricks when I came across Nuvo bricks, that they say can replace render. Anyone seen this? http://www.boral.com.au/nuvoaspire/_home_.asp?AUD=nuvoaspire Corner block, lake view, custom design Re: Lightweight & Render vs Brick 5Jul 21, 2008 9:39 pm Hi Scribe,
We have brick below and a white lightweight stuff up top. I think it makes no difference to the strength or structure of the house. However.......... The difference is how it is finished of with the render. I'm not sure of all the details but I think its in the prepartion of the walls before it is rendered then how the render is applied . We have 2 coats of render applied then our colour was mixed in the 3rd coat of render( not just rolled on ) and evenly spread by good tradesman. One small section of the house has taken 2 days, it will be about 2 weeks of work to do this 3rd coat. The quality of the job is outstanding. I have seen so many bad jobs of rendered houses that I told my builder it has to be perfect. Some builders render straight over blue board which then peels away from the house (neighbour of mine) Thats all the advise I can offer...pick your builder and tradesman very carefully. Mrs B Re: Lightweight & Render vs Brick 6Jul 22, 2008 9:08 pm i would be cautious of having colour mixed in to your render. its easy to pick out areas that are a few shades off, especially if some bits need touching up.
With the render applied over light weight panels, this usually has reinforcing within the render, or a reinfocing fabric is applied in the first coat. The build up is approx 12 - 15mm and the finished surface gets painted which ever colour you like. This is the process I use. Hi Alex, Thanks for the reply again. I had a chat with the builder, he said he will use primer, then hydrotec which comes with colour and sealer as well.
