Browse Forums Building A New House Re: Window height for 2700mm ceilings 3Oct 01, 2015 9:06 pm oneJohn The traditional approach with 2400mm ceilings has been to bring the window up to eaves height (2100mm), and not have any brickwork above the windows. Then when going to 2700, to leave the windows as they are, and have 300mm of brickwork above the windows. In a way, having that brickwork above the windows designates the house as having the quality of the taller ceilings, over the cheap 2400 houses. Assuming you have eaves, the logical change would be to raise the top of the windows by 300mm to bring the head of the windows up to 2400 (2100 tall window). This can give a better feel inside, with the bigger windows opening the space up more. The downsides are that with bigger windows you get poorer insulation, but you don't get much benefit in light entry due to the eaves blocking to top part of the window anyhow. It can also make curtains/blinds harder to operate, as most people won't be able to reach the tracking. The next step again is to go from floor to eaves (2400 tall windows), which is a different look again, both on the inside and outside. Waterproofing windows from the floor is a bit trickier, so some builders try to stay away from it. For our new house, we have 1800 tall windows across the front. This is partly to keep a balanced 300mm of brickwork below and above the windows to keep them visually balanced from the outside. It helps keep a more traditional look to fit in the older area it's in. Out the back, we have the tops of the windows set higher, to give that lighter feel, and to match in with the 2340 tall internal doors. For us, the tricky part will be to integrate the look internally, and that will partly involve having higher-set curtains and pelmets on the front windows. Thanks that's really helpful. I think 2100 it is Thanks mate. Yeah good points! Leaning towards Option 3 to get a bit extra space in the cabinets but not going too crazy high (and expensive).
