Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Sep 15, 2015 9:06 pm If there was a zero star option for Huxley Homes I would select it. If there was an “unlike” button I would press it. If I could rewind the last 4 months I wasted dealing with Huxley I would. I think you get the picture. We originally were ready to build our new home with Metricon, as they had a display home that we really liked. We obtained a costing which was close to budget. However, we also made the mistake of visiting a Huxley home in the same display village. We spoke to the Huxley sales consultant about the possibility of a custom build and were upfront about our budget from the very beginning. We had many conversations and written correspondence back and forth expressing our budget concerns and reinforcing our budget limitations. We were reassured both verbally and in writing that the custom build rate would be a certain amount plus variations such as flooring, Basix, driveways, ducted air etc. Only after we had this reassurance did we proceed to pay a custom design fee of $3300 and later a site plan and soil test fee of $2350. We were advised we were unable to proceed further without these payments. The design took 3 months. There were delays. The tender took one month to generate and was still missing items that I had specifically requested to be on the tender. We were shocked to see the base price irrespective of variations was almost $100,000 over what we had been told to expect for a custom build. Our next step was to contact management to advise that our base price on our tender was significantly higher than the amount we had been told to expect. The Huxley office advised that the only appropriate person to discuss this with would be the Home Australia Operations Manager. The Operations Manager oversees Huxley Homes and other divisions of Home Australia nationwide. His emailed response was that Huxley are unable to build the home at the custom build price we were expecting and then had the nerve to suggest we make changes to the design to bring the cost down. There was no apology or acknowledgement that Huxley Homes had misled us about the custom build price, despite us having written evidence of this. We then sent him an email requesting a refund of any money we had paid to Huxley, as we clearly stated in written correspondence to Huxley before making any payment that we would be wasting both their time and ours if the project did not fall within our budget. We requested a phone call to discuss. He did not call, neither did he respond by email. We tried calling him at his Western Australian office. We left a message. He did not return our call. We are now lodging a complaint with the Department of Fair Trading regarding this poor excuse for a building company. We are back to square one with our new home project and have gone back to Metricon. The build price has now increased by over $10,000 within the 4 months we wasted dealing with Huxley Homes. I urge anybody that is considering building with Huxley or any division of Home Australia to please reconsider. I am determined to prevent others from experiencing the delays and broken dreams that they represent. This company has no honesty, integrity, efficiency or professionalism. They will not hesitate to lie to you. Do not even consider getting this company to build your home. Huxley should change their slogan from “Building Lasting Relationships” to “Ruining your Dreams”. Home Australia is the over-arching company for Newstart, Ashford, Huxley and Homestead (and one in WA I think) - yes they are all the same and the senator Bob Day is the sole director of everything. I am with you and extremely concerned because I am almost at site with Homestead in SA and haven't had the smoothest of experiences through the admin stage. If I were you I would seriously consider looking elsewhere - I have a feeling that if Huxley or Ashford go under the rest will follow suit Re: Huxley Homes 13Oct 09, 2016 8:41 pm I have contracted to them, it was unprofessional there's no quality, we started frame no garage door beams or alfresco a house frame if trusses are ready should take a day tied down a day and a half max, frames took us sometimes a week to complete due to not having correct tie down or supervisors just dicking around in general. Same with eaves and it felt like 4 months in between frame straighten which is where we put windows in remove braces cut out doorways etc, and fixout never ending dramas Re: Huxley Homes 15Oct 09, 2016 9:14 pm Yeah look I'm just saying that from a QLD perspective the owners were incredibly drained and stressed, find a builder with a solid trade base and good supervisors there the guys who push things along Re: Huxley Homes 16Oct 14, 2016 6:44 pm LochietheChippy I have contracted to them, it was unprofessional there's no quality, we started frame no garage door beams or alfresco a house frame if trusses are ready should take a day tied down a day and a half max, frames took us sometimes a week to complete due to not having correct tie down or supervisors just dicking around in general. Lol Re: Huxley Homes 17Oct 14, 2016 8:01 pm Hi Ladybugs, we've just pulled the pin with Homestead and we were about to go to site. Both the state manager and finance officer told us that the interstate companies are dead (Ashford and Huxley) and the problems are now spreading elsewhere, already build times here in SA are delayed and work has stopped on some sites. I would definitely recommend looking elsewhere, even if you have to forfeit a deposit it's a small price to pay for peace of mind. Ask for references and speak to them. If they are defensive or try to avoid the request, walk. 1 74716 I would never build with Fowler homes. I built with them in 2021 and till date maintenance issues are pending.
