Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Sep 08, 2015 11:54 am We're in the process of getting plans finalised for our new build and the question has come up as to whether or not we want a phone line (copper)? I'm leaning towards no as we haven't personally had a landline in years and we live in a suburb that was lucky enough to get the NBN before Abbott made it completely crap (fibre to the home). So I can't really see any reason to get one installed. The only reason I would think of it is for resale reasons down the track. But by then landlines will probably be even less popular than they are now. What's everyone's thoughts? Will it save me much but not providing a copper connection to the house? Cheers Re: Installing a phone line - still necessary? 2Sep 08, 2015 12:31 pm It is only really needed for a phone, non-NBN internet and monitored alarm. Even if you don't plan on having any of these services, I would still have the copper line run now while you have the opportunity. It becomes much more expensive after the build. Line run from the street to the house? or cabled internally? AFAIK, the law is such that there will be nothing at the street for you to connect your copper line. (in a new estate) I'm not even too sure why this is being offered as an option to people. Basically - if you can get FTTP then there will be no copper infrastructure. To clarify we're in an old suburb that was fortunate enough to receive FTTP before it got axed. So copper still exists. Is that copper all going to be phased out? Re: Installing a phone line - still necessary? 8Sep 08, 2015 8:25 pm We haven't had a land line for 15 years.
