Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Aug 18, 2015 8:57 am I've been advised as of recently, showers can't have awning windows in them due to some new plumbing requirement that protects water from going in between the walls. This doesn't make sense to me and I like the awning for ventilation to dry out the shower area. Has anyone else thats building now come across this? Re: Awning window in shower 2Aug 18, 2015 9:08 am We were told we could only have a fixed glass window in the window over our shower too. Surely this can't be right. I'm looking for other options. Does anyone know the exact regulation? Re: Awning window in shower 6Aug 18, 2015 11:17 am We are almost at handover with our new house in Melbourne, we have a walk in shower in our ensuite and had an awning window installed for extra ventilation, but we also have a fan over our walk in shower. We just paid for upgrade for awning window.
Re: Awning window in shower 8Aug 18, 2015 11:22 am PVBuild Can you request that whoever has told you the above regulation provides the specific documentation? Sounds like someone just doesn't want to do it... Agree. I'm following up via other contacts at the building company and the window company that provides their windows. I find the awning window doesn't really do a very good job of coping with the condensation despite being quite large. That's interesting, can't answer as yet re:ventilation as we haven't moved into our new house yet, but our builder automatically placed fans over our ensuite Walk in shower and bathroom shower. So I'm hoping with the combination of a highlight window and fan will be sufficient ventilation? As a side note: our highlight awning window is (574 mm x 1530 mm). I think this is the key difference. The standard states that the wall has to be waterproofed up to 1800mm. A highlight window should meet this requirement if it's above 1800mm. I'm confirming this with the builder. EDIT: yep, apparently the builder and their building surveyor have said they don't do this. It's probably specific to this builder 4 14302 I'll look into different shower heads and ask the plumber about some engineering and see what he says.
