Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Aug 11, 2015 6:28 pm Hi all, Hoping someone can help me out with this frame issue. I haven't used a building inspector as the house is being built in a rural area and struggled to find someone local that could fit in with the build schedule. Noticed that a stud had been cut to fit the breather pipe, which meant that the stud wasn't actually fixed to anything at the bottom and was just 'hanging there'. Here's what it looked like: Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Mentioned this to SS and he said it would be fixed, however now that the plaster has gone up I've noticed it wasn't fixed: Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Am going to bring it up again with the SS, but am hoping someone can help me with the regulation side of things just so I know where I stand. To me it should be fixed otherwise the spacing between the 2 full length studs is ~800mm. Any input would be appreciated Re: Frame issue - stud cut to fit breather pipe 2Aug 11, 2015 7:44 pm Sorry I got no pics. (But it could be work blocking them) Re: Frame issue - stud cut to fit breather pipe 3Aug 11, 2015 9:08 pm Hmmm not sure why, here are the direct links: https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/spa/7 ... pjlyqe.png https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/spa/7 ... v-7i9q.png https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/spa/7 ... fig7ki.png Re: Frame issue - stud cut to fit breather pipe 4Aug 11, 2015 9:19 pm Sorry tom_air, it is my work blocking it, my guess is they are working, i just cant see. Hopefully someone on here will be able to help you. Re: Frame issue - stud cut to fit breather pipe 5Aug 15, 2015 11:09 am Bump. Is anyone able to help me out with this one? SS is saying it is fine, but I still am not convinced it doesn't break regulations. A stud that doesn't go the full length may as well not be there as far as I'm concerned, which then means the spam between the studs on either side is around 800mm. Re: Frame issue - stud cut to fit breather pipe 6Aug 15, 2015 12:08 pm Is it a load bearing wall? If so then yes, have them cut the sheet and cleat another stud beside it. If its not, (and this is where the experts will howl me down and say if they missed that then what else have they missed blah blah blah) seriously I wouldnt worry about it. Re: Frame issue - stud cut to fit breather pipe 7Aug 15, 2015 12:46 pm I'd say that wall's unlikely to be load bearing. Given that, unless you'll ever want to hang anything off that stud, the role of the stud is just to support the plasterboard. By being there, even without being connected up, it will still stiffen up the mid-span of the board. It does create a load concentration point at the bottom of the stud, but I'd say that's unlikely to ever wear or break through the plasterboard. So what they've done is rather poor, but if it doesn't get fixed it probably won't be a problem to you. Re: Frame issue - stud cut to fit breather pipe 8Aug 15, 2015 1:08 pm It isn't a load bearing wall. The thing that annoys me about this is: a) They wouldn't leave it like that if it was their own home b) I raised this as an issue before the plaster went on so they had a chance to fi it but clearly they didn't We may want to hang stuff off that wall in the future, so it would be nice to have the option to hang from that stud. Re: Frame issue - stud cut to fit breather pipe 9Aug 15, 2015 5:18 pm tom_air We may want to hang stuff off that wall in the future, so it would be nice to have the option to hang from that stud. What are you going to hang 1m off the ground, 800mm in from the corner? The stud is still very much supported by a noggin. Re: Frame issue - stud cut to fit breather pipe 11Aug 15, 2015 6:10 pm Thanks Glennc74 for those images, pretty clear that this stud doesn't conform to those diagrams. AJW What are you going to hang 1m off the ground, 800mm in from the corner? The stud is still very much supported by a noggin. The stud that has been cut has no where near the strength of a stud that runs all the way to the bottom plate. You're right we may never hang anything off that stud. .It's more the fact that it is sloppy work and should never have been left like that. Noggins are there to stop horizontal movement, they would barely help if you were to hang a heavy TV off that stud. Part of me is wanting to leave it be and move on, but the other side of me is annoyed that sloppy work like that was left even after being brought up with the SS. I'm sitting here next to wall that I know has 2 studs cut out to make a niche. I built this house over 6 years ago, I've been 35+ years in the building industry and the reason I simply cut 2 studs out is because I know there are things you can do that are not issues, contrary to what the books might say. This is 100% true. You can not hang anything on steel frames. very frustrating 8 8053 Hello everyone Please advice me how can I install mesh security window or we cab say mesh flyscreen inside while the pvc plantation shutters are already installed?
