Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Jul 27, 2015 9:38 pm Are my husband and myself the only people who don't like bulkheads above the kitchen cabinets? I know its more cleaning but we both like the idea of leaving the bulkheads out and using the top of the cupboards to display some of the bits and pieces that bring us pleasure (like coloured glass). A luxury we couldn't have in NZ because of earthquakes. I've looked at pictures of kitchens with and without and quite frankly some bulkheads like quite, well, bulky and out of place. Re: Bulkheads Or Not? 3Jul 27, 2015 9:57 pm Yep. I like the look of no bulkheads -- open 'shelf' or 'cupboard' in showhomes. But I'm having bulkheads as that looks better to me than manky grime (dust + steam) as I can't see myself getting up there to clean. Re: Bulkheads Or Not? 4Jul 27, 2015 10:02 pm Have no bulkheads......and no overheads.......an open shelf. Will wipe it clean. Re: Bulkheads Or Not? 6Jul 28, 2015 8:15 am It didn't occur to me 'til after the house was built; but I think the bulkheads look silly because the cupboard doors sit proud of them. It'd look a lot better if they built the plasterboard out, to be flush with the doors. It's less noticeably if you've got a dropped-ceiling section over the kitchen area; a look which I still like, even though I know it's getting a bit old. Re: Bulkheads Or Not? 7Jul 28, 2015 8:55 am Our current place has no bulkheads and I hate it. I was happy to have bulkheads as standard in the new one But I can also see an argument for open-but-closed-in shelving - like having the top of the cabinets framed out so it looks "finished", not just left bare. Or perhaps with glass doors on the front? As long as it looks finished and not just unfinished and dirty, no bulkheads can look good too Jen (& Dave) Plantation Bronte, Ormeau Ridge, Gold Coast QLD 12/03/2015 - Commencement... 26/08/2015 - Handover! viewtopic.php?f=31&t=76446 Re: Bulkheads Or Not? 8Jul 28, 2015 2:56 pm Interesting. I did as suggested and had a browse through a couple of house and decorating magazines and found that its about half and half. In fact the first 3 kitchens I looked at had no bulkheads. Re: Bulkheads Or Not? 9Jul 28, 2015 2:58 pm Oh also, Forg, out bulkheads are deeper than our overheads so the overheads sit a couple of inches BEHIND the bulkhead, which I think looks ok. I agree that if it was the other way around, it would look odd though. You can definitely set up corner cabinets to have the same gap as standard doors. 2 13532 The HIA contract, in the term & conditions section states that "Commencment" is deemed when the drainage is started or the piers are dug or the slab is formed up (incase… 2 6150 DIY, Home Maintenance & Repair But if it is a ground level open pit, then it is not a charged system.
