I think maybe the roof is too light? or maybe the main bricks are too yellow?? I cant figure out what it is that I don't like. any suggestions?? I was thinking maybe cement rendering the main walls, but its so expensive. its doing my head in!! (the down pipe is being moved... don't ask!! that's a whole nother story! ) Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ ... but then, this looks nice, which is why I think its the roof that's ruining it, because you cant see it in this picture???? Re: Whats wrong with this facade? 3Jul 17, 2015 9:07 pm Hey, I think the roof is fine. Funny I was just thinking (before I scrolled to the end pic, that it could just do with some white to give it a bit of a 'lift' (brighten up with some strong contrast). Then I got to your last pic. Which has white! Anyway, I reckon you could just wait until you've landscaped and try bringing in some white. Frangipani tree, white roses? Or my first thought ... Attach some white ladder-type or vertical strip deco treatments in between your windows with white planter boxes below with a splash of bright coloured flowers. That would lift it a lot without any expense. FWIW I think you've done a great job. It's a very nice looking house! And will look much better with landscaping (even without adding white!) Re: Whats wrong with this facade? 4Jul 18, 2015 2:54 pm thanks guys. I agree. its very dark. it feels a bit gloomy ? I wonder if I could "white wash" the main bricks? is that a thing??? make them a bit whiter. I had a bit of a play with 'paint' last night after your suggestion about landscaping... don't laugh Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ I think your right about the landscaping Re: Whats wrong with this facade? 5Jul 18, 2015 9:17 pm I don't think the roof is really a big issue with it. I think though that it does look rather dark and dull. I think that window coverings and landscaping will go a long way toward fixing this, as per this image, where I've lightened the windows to appear more like curtains, and roughly pasted in some grass. Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ I'd prefer the light bricks to be less yellow, but I doubt it's worth doing anything about. People do limewash bricks to whiten them, and this could work quite well here, but then that opens you up to ongoing maintenance as you have to keep redoing it over the years. It's nice to see a brick house. With the current fad of render, it's more tricky to work to modern styles and retain face brickwork. It's worth persisting through, and houses do look a lot better once they are more finished. Re: Whats wrong with this facade? 6Jul 19, 2015 3:14 am That looks great datambo! Huge difference Adding a path, letterbox, window treatments like John suggests, can add light contrast really effectively which will really lift it. im sure you'll be loving it! I agree with John ... It's great to see bricks. Your house facade will wear the passing of time/trends so much better and you will be grateful for that in 10-20 years if you stay It's a nice facade! PS I think a white gravel path leading up to those dark bricks would look pretty fab Re: Whats wrong with this facade? 7Jul 19, 2015 7:18 am I agree with all of the above, the roof is great, the bricks just don't go together. I love rendered walls/houses I think they look great and appeal to my love of plain and simple. But I don't like the expense and less so the ongoing maintenance. Brick is easy. (We are having a tiny bit of render on our façade). If you whitewash it would be very very difficult to go back to brick. I think the improvements already suggested sound great I think you need to tie the bricks together to make it more cohesive - what about a lighter timber (to tie in with the light bricks ) planter in front of the dark bricks with light foliage (lomandras/acacias) and same wood deck path from the front door to the street? The addition of landscaping, paths, driveways, lighting, letterboxes will make everything so different so don't do anything to your bricks. Re: Whats wrong with this facade? 8Jul 19, 2015 8:33 am I think if you were to render the yellow bricks the same or similar shade to the fascia it would really improve the look. I agree that the roof isn't the issue, it's the yellow brick. It's not easy choosing bricks for a house and they ALWAYS look different on a house compared to the small sample boards and walls that the manufacturers have. Why people actually LIKE render is beyond me. It's a ugly, boring surface that has no life. What it does give you however is the burden of maintenance for the rest of the homes life. Datambo, I'm not the greatest fan of the particular bricks you have selected. To me they don't have any character. BUT.. that's just me and if we all believed the same well... we would all live in rendered homes that have no life at all lol. Don't touch the house. It WILL be perfect once you do the landscaping. Think a little outside the square and maybe add some trees / shrubs that will really "POP" (I hate that saying haha) against the wall. Yes I like render but my advice was don't render, because brick is better in my humble and kindly worded opinion. The front of our home will be rendered lol. And yes I still hate it.. it's a compromise to deal with the developers. Re: Whats wrong with this facade? 12Jul 19, 2015 2:45 pm thanks guys! that's such a huge help. its so hard picking colours from tiny little samples and imagining what it will all look like together. the "yellow" bricks, looked much more creamy and neutral in the show room I think from what most of you guys are saying, landscaping will be the ultimate test. if it still looks dull and dreary after that, then its back to the drawing board, and possibly some "adjustments" to the bricks. we are set on 2 acres, with a 30m set-back from the street, so I guess we have lots of room to work with. I like the idea of adding wood, like decking. I think it will soften the feel of the house. which is what I drew in my picture. have a bit of a wooden porch, then have the wood extending into paths going along either side of the front of the house, with lots of leafy natives. Re: Whats wrong with this facade? 13Jul 19, 2015 8:15 pm I'd agree that the best approach is to continue with it as it is, and keep open the option of rendering if you're still not happy in the future, but wait until it's more finished and established, because things change quite a bit between now and then. To give an idea of where render might take it, I cooked up these edits: Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ My editing isn't great, and that's probably not the right colour, but based on that I think even with render over the cream brick, there a still some challenges to getting the look right. Alternatively, for a lot less render, you could also do it the other way around, and render over the dark bricks. I think this option may be better start for a lasting look, especially as it then matches around the house. It also helps bring the feature wall forward.
