Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Jul 17, 2015 11:53 am Hi everyone, We have just had the slab laid on our Metricon two story home, so we are well past the variation stage, and I am having a minor panic about our ceiling heights. My husband and I didn't elect to upgrade our ceiling heights, both of us are on the short side and we made the error of assuming the the standard height would be fine. We are having 2.55m for ground floor (8.5 foot?) and 2.40m upstairs. Now, I am looking around the Internet and discovering that it seems EVERYONE upgrades the ceiling height and so rather than having average ceiling heights, we have comparatively low ceilings. So, anyone else stick with the standard heights? If you did, has it been ok? Thanks Re: Metricon build - anyone NOT upgrade ceiling heights 2Jul 17, 2015 12:06 pm 2.55m is the new 2.7m and a compromise between 2.4 and 2.7. Advantages are cost savings and lower energy bills for heating. Make your internal doors 2.2m height if you can. Re: Metricon build - anyone NOT upgrade ceiling heights 3Jul 17, 2015 1:09 pm Right through the 80s and 90s everyone was building 2.4m ceilings, and the people have liked living in them. Some people currently pay extra to drop their kitchen ceiling down to 2.4m, and feel it's ok. I think in WA, it's still common to have 2.4m in the bedrooms (though I'm not sure seeing as they always talk in terms of brick courses), so 2.4m for upstairs bedrooms is probably fine. 2.55m isn't too bad for living areas, so I wouldn't be too concerned. Re: Metricon build - anyone NOT upgrade ceiling heights 4Jul 17, 2015 1:18 pm My last house had 2.4 ceiling height. I am 6 foot and my wife just over 5 foot. The height was fine for 28 or so years. Don't sweat it. This house I am building we chose 2.590 and not the 2.4 or 2.7. Only because we could afford it and no other reason. I don't expect to notice the difference that much between 2.4 and 2.590 in ceiling height. Our plastering is complete and we are really happy with the ceiling heights. I dont even notice the 2.4m ones upstairs, it feels so light and spacious that it just doesn't matter. Best of luck with your build. Re: Metricon build - anyone NOT upgrade ceiling heights 7Jul 18, 2015 9:14 am Fantastic Tribe7 that's really terrific, makes me feel a lot better.
