Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Nov 24, 2009 4:28 pm Hi all, We are building a Plunkett home in the WA suburb of Riverton. As the builder is doing our exposed agg. paths and driveway, I am going to dig in some conduits under the drive and paths, prior to them being laid for future electrical cables and irrigation pipes. I am having a few confliciting accounts of the type of conduit to use. I know that for irrigation I will use a 30mm white PVC pipe, dug in to a depth of about 300mm capped at both ends. However I am having trouble deciding what conduit to use for future electrical cables under the drive. I am aware they have to be 600mm underground which is fine, BUT what conduit do I use and what diameter would people recommend. I have heard you have to use orange for 240v elec cables? Then i will cap it at both ends and note location for future use by electrician. Any advice, or stories on what others have done would be appreciated. PS: sorry if this is in the wrong forum (it is about a new build) Re: What type of Conduit to "dig in" prior to driveway down 2Nov 24, 2009 7:23 pm A Good electrical supply joint can advise on cable conduit. I needed some for a adsl ( 35 meters to a rear block so laid it it when the main trench for sewer and water and gas and power was already doug ) put some string thru it for later convience. The telstar stuff had p20 I think on it and the word telstra so the electrical supply people got it right. (I checked with telstra before) cost $37 and took me about 30 mins. A power conduit MUST be min 900mm under the surface.I strongly suggest you dig the trench, then put a layer of blue metal rock or red scoria rock 300mm over the conduit. This way when you are digging in the are, you will know you are near power, and how deep you are. Orange for 240volts or if its just for extra low voltage garden lighting it can be gray and put at any depth the conduit would need to be undamaged regardless of what network is in play.
