Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Jul 07, 2015 1:42 pm Hi All, We are unsure whether or not we will want to put ceiling fans in. Our builder can put provisions in for them, but obviously at a cost. Is this really necessary or can we have all the work done after our build at close to the same overall cost when we have decided what we want? Thanks for your help! Re: Ceiling fan provision - do I need them? 3Jul 08, 2015 12:15 am Get a junction box put in your ceiling by builder and maybe a switch on the wall or run a conduit in the wall so fan can be wired to existing light switch faceplate at a later date. Re: Ceiling fan provision - do I need them? 4Jul 08, 2015 10:07 am Also get some extra noggins in the frame to hold fan weight. As said above get a junction box . This will make it easier to install fan in future Cheers Building Monaco Q2 with Henley in Wollert Re: Ceiling fan provision - do I need them? 5Jul 08, 2015 10:54 am When I was owner-building, the electrician I had would run an extra switch wire for each light, and tape it off each end as a provision for adding a fan. This was basically just the cost of the wire which only a few dollars, and you'd be silly not to do it. I also put the noggins into the ceiling to support lights and/or a fan, which wasn't much work at all. But then going with a project builder, they'll charge up around $100 for each one of these "provisions", and the value proposition isn't so clear if you're not likely to use them all. Re: Ceiling fan provision - do I need them? 6Jul 08, 2015 11:45 am Depends on the type of fan you wish to use, if you use one with a remote you only need to put in a standard light. We did this in the current house we live in and plan to do it in the next one too. Depending on your taste there wasn't much difference in price between a traditional wall mounted switch fan and a remote one.
