Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Jul 06, 2015 10:28 pm Hi folks just a quick question - so I have been quoted to upgrade the entrance door to the cheapest door with glass panels and it's $460 ( Corinthian Madison 104 or something to that effect). Now I was told for upgrades I pay the differnece but it seems like a big jump surely the standard entrance door would not be that much cheaper than the upgrade I after? Does that sound correct or does it sound like I'm paging for the whole door? Which I wouldn't think should be the case as the standard door would be covered in my build price ? Sorry it's a stupid question but I didn't want to offend my builder ..... Re: Difference in door price 2Jul 06, 2015 10:46 pm Not a stupid question at all. Sorry to be so blunt and sound so depressing but ... they rip off on everything, you learn to get used to it. Re: Difference in door price 3Jul 06, 2015 10:53 pm Haha thank you tomcat! I did think that anyway but thought maybe I was just a bit negative and things really cost a lot more then I'd imagine! I decided against paying out that much and will replace it after handover if need be ( worried about the hallway being too dark without any glass in entrance door) Re: Difference in door price 4Jul 06, 2015 11:36 pm that's the way. Ask them to price what you'd like anyway as sometimes they get really good volume discounts with some suppliers and it can work out 'reasonable'. Quite a few people are doing what you've just said with some things for that very reason. Such a shame as all this perfectly good gear is fitted then taken down. Hopefully it's recycled in a good way or sold so it's not wasted. Hey, you can probably buy your Madison 104 (that came standard for someone else but they didn't want) on Gumtree even cheaper! Good luck. Re: Difference in door price 5Jul 07, 2015 7:52 am It'll depend on what your builder considers "standard". Some builders have more of a range than others. Like TC suggested, try to find the cost of the door on its own first so you know how much you'd have to pay to replace it later. Even if they're charging you more than the actual difference, it might still be less than what you'd have to pay to do it yourself later. Bunnings sell Corinthian doors and I'm not sure what size door you're getting but they seem to be $450-$500. Also are you sure that's the cheapest one with glass? We're getting the 101 which just has a single vertical panel, maybe that's cheaper? Also to me it sounds like I'm paying full price for the door when shouldn't I be paying the difference between the standard door and the upgrade ? Re: Difference in door price 7Jul 07, 2015 9:16 am I'm not sure of your build situation but bear in mind also you might need a specific type of door to meet covenant requirements or bushfire requirements or something, and remember doors come in multiple widths and heights...Make sure you know exactly what door you want to put in after handover now, so you are sure you're really going to save money and that the opening that your builder puts in is the right size Jen (& Dave) Plantation Bronte, Ormeau Ridge, Gold Coast QLD 12/03/2015 - Commencement... 26/08/2015 - Handover! viewtopic.php?f=31&t=76446 Re: Difference in door price 8Jul 07, 2015 1:28 pm You will find with upgrades that often you will pay the same or close to 2/3 the retail price of the item you want, with no credit from the builder for what they would have put in anyway. It's still worth asking, as this is not always the case. As mentioned though do get your door size upgraded at least to what you want so it is easier to change to the door you want later. Re: Difference in door price 10Jul 07, 2015 3:32 pm Another point to note is that builder's door comes with handles and is painted (usually to the same colour as the door frame). Bear in mind that the doors you purchase from Bunnings, Doors Plus, M & B etc do NOT come painted and you may need to purchase the door handles separately as well. I presume most doors are spray painted, so unless you purchase the door only and plan to paint and install yourself, it should work out cheaper. But, if you purchased fully installed price, you may not get the desired quality with a hand paint after the door is fitted. Building at Bletchley Park, WA with Blue Print Homes 920 was enough to get the furniture in. We live in a pretty safe area and it’s great to see people walking to the front door. We’re not too fussed about people… 4 2530 Wow I hadn't realised things had gotten that pricey in just a couple of years since I built, that is crazy with how much land is now costing if you aren't lucky enough to… 3 7309 Hi, you've probably already resolved this, however, Commbank will probably pay the funds to you after you send evidence the work is done regardless the change in the quotes. 1 35748 |
