Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Jul 03, 2015 4:23 pm Hey Guys, Thought I'd start a chat - we are about to begin our build with Metricon in Chisholm Waterford County (Newcastle/Maitland Area) Thought it might be cool to pick up some tips from those who have done all of this before or who are on the same journey. Our land is currently in the registration office, we are hoping break dirt by the end of August. We are building a customised version of the Soho 32 and am hoping it will all come together as planned! The process has been interesting to date and a steep learning curve. We are due to do our internal colour selections at the end of July along with electrical plan and tiles. We've put an extra $5K allowance in for electrical and plan to do some ourselves. Would love to hear any tips or ideas on what to do and what not to do! The tiling and flooring is tricky, Metricon use DiLorenzo and it is challenging to find a nice tile in the Metro range so I think upgrading and paying extra for porcelain tiles is likely. We are looking at possibly doing the main flooring ourselves after handover as I know it will save a few $$$ but ideally it would be nice to have a house with a floor at handover its probably an extra $3K. I'm a graphic designer, so am completely over thinking colours and styling lol - this is the part I love but also the part that is doing my head in. I absolutely love the Frosty Carrina caesarstone but of course its a $6K upgrade! lol Ah compromise at every turn. Our dream also is to put a pool in, does anyone have any recommendations for local companies that do a great job for a great price? Keen to chat and get some great ideas from this forum! Happy Friday! Mel Re: Who else is building in Waterford County or with Metrico 2Jul 03, 2015 8:12 pm Hey Mel We aren't building at Waterford County but have spent a lot of time there at the display village over the last year or so lol. As for electrical, it depends what you are after and what Metricons elec prices are like. As for tiles, you just have to weigh up whether convenience is worth the extra $3k or not! I'm a graphic designer too so I completely feel your pain lol. Re: Who else is building in Waterford County or with Metrico 3Jul 03, 2015 10:57 pm Hey Kristy, Thanks for the reply, I had a quick look at your blog and your plans look great! How are you going with all of your choices? I actually never quite made it to the Clarendon displays we looked a few landed at Metricon, found a house and a block that suited each other and went with it. Ill have to check them out for some colour ideas, although the styling at the Waterford displays is a little tired! This is our first build so really flying blind! I can see how doing it a second time would be beneficial! Re: Who else is building in Waterford County or with Metrico 4Jul 03, 2015 11:11 pm We haven't gone to the colour studio yet but I am going for a Scandinavian look so white paint and lots of light! Bathrooms are where I am undecided at the moment, will have to wait and see what is included! Yeah the display homes are getting pretty old now. The new display village is due to open at the end of the year so the current ones will all be closed down soonish. You definitely learn lessons each time you build! My biggest tip would be don't scrimp on storage, if possible extend your garage (especially if you have big cars), and get everything in writing!!! Re: Who else is building in Waterford County or with Metrico 5Jul 04, 2015 3:02 pm The new display homes will be right near we are building but a little too late for inspiration! We've added heaps of internal storage we've had to compromise on the garage size Metricon have generous sized garages but we've had to cut 75cm off our house to fit on the block! So have had to recess a bedroom into the extra shed space so unfortunately it's standard size, it was a compromise and an issue we had no idea that we'd have! Re: Who else is building in Waterford County or with Metrico 7Jul 29, 2015 12:38 am Hi jradsy, that will make us neighbours! Mac Jones build beautiful homes, how exciting! Which house plan are you building? I'm familiar with a few of theirs... We are building in stage A with Metricon, have just completed our colours and electrical selections last week. We got news today to say that our land is registered I'm sure that's the same for you. With our house plans I've been trying to push Metricon to get the submitted, apparently they are at the waterboard and should go to council by next week? I was hoping they'd be there already. Any idea how long Maitland council take to approve plans? Looking forward to following your build! A survey must’ve completed by a certified surveyor.
