Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Jun 04, 2015 10:19 am Is there anyone else who is wanting to or is already building a house on a tight budget in the lower price range? I was thinking that we could share tips i.e building companies that are true to their quotes, and things you can do to improve the look and value of a cheaper home that won't cost the earth. Just a thought. Re: Building On A Tight Budget At The Lower Price Range 2Jun 05, 2015 11:08 am We too are looking to build on a very tight budget. At this stage we can only really afford to grab some land to build on later so we are learning and looking for any way to bring down the prices wherever possible such as determining what we can do ourselves or call in favors from friends and family. Cheers. Re: Building On A Tight Budget At The Lower Price Range 3Jun 05, 2015 7:10 pm Unfortunaly the bank is insisting on a turnkey. Its quite frustrating because my husband is a cabinetmaker and can build the kitchen and cabintry and the majority of companies that do turnkey aren't willing to allow him to do that. One has said its no problem and will deduct a generous amount from the quote and also allow him to come on site and do it at the same time their builders are in there (my husband has a white card and knows the companies owner). Unfortunatly that company doesn't have any plans we like and we don't want to incur extra costs altering plans. A couple of the other companies have also said they will allow it, (very reluctantly) but the amounts they are willing to deduct are ridiculous ($3000 for a kitchen)!! One said as an example that if the kitchen cost $10,000 they would only deduct $7500 as they still want their profit on it. Interestly a few have told us to organise our own aircon and driveway as their profit margin on those is quite high and we could save a good few thousand. We are also going to do our own landscaping, letterbox and clothesline.
