Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Jun 01, 2015 3:20 pm Hi, Has anyone done network and home theatre wiring themselves building with mcdonald jones? I've just seen the prices they charge and its a joke (wiring and wall plates dont seem to cost much) My brother built with masterton homes and he just asked the foreman if he could do the wiring himself and he said yes. We still have about a year till they start building and just been informed by mcdonald jones that they dont install anything supplied by the customer. Thanks Re: Home hub/network and theatre wiring 2Jun 01, 2015 11:07 pm It's also an issue of insurance and OHS liability for them - if you injure yourself whilst on their construction site. Construction industry in NSW requires 'white card' training / certification to access construction sites. I made the mistake of supplying a floor-mount bath tap, which the builder's plumber installed badly. The tap broke because of the poor installation, however builder ( or their plumber ) would take no responsibility for it. On the other hand, I had exemplary service from them with warranty issues for a toilet they supplied. Maybe a compromise is to arrange for a licensed electrician you organise to do the extras for you. If you haven't signed a contract yet, you can put it is a condition on the contract that they will allow your electrician to access the site. I was working with a custom builder and they accepted this. Bigger building companies may not. With volume builders, your ability to do things yourself on the house while under construction seems to come down to the site supervisor, and that may depend on the supervisor's impression of how well you can be trusted. Generally the head office will give you the hard line about no access, but the supervisor may be more flexible in practice. We already paid for somfy motors for the blinds.
