Browse Forums Building A New House 1 May 30, 2015 12:59 pm Hi, Just wondering if there is a standard height for light switches in new homes? We are finalising all of our selections and on our plans the light switches are 1000mm from F.F.L (does this mean floor level?). That seems low to us as we are in a rental at the moment where they are that height and it's driving us nuts as our 2 year old can get up in the morning and turn all of the lights on! I'm hoping we can change the height even though we've been told we'll face a $330 admin fee for any changes... I guess we just assumed the standard height would be higher! Thanks Our build - viewtopic.php?f=31&t=77368 Re: Standard height for light switches 2May 30, 2015 1:27 pm Ours are at 1100mm. Your kid is going to grow anyway so there isn't any point worrying about it. Re: Standard height for light switches 3May 30, 2015 2:09 pm True! But we may have another kid and want to avoid them being able to wake themselves (and us!) up from basically toddler age - we used to sticky tape the switches but it's just a pita :/ Hmm, weird cos most other houses seem to be higher! Maybe it's older houses... You can always tell the SS to mention it to them aswell Re: Standard height for light switches 5May 30, 2015 9:53 pm When I was building my new home, I went around the Yarrabilba display village, and measured several different height off the floor items, one was the light switches. They varied from 1000mm up to 1400mm, with most around the 1100mm height, so that's where I placed all of mine. Owner Building at Jimboomba Woods in Logan City Qld. Re: Standard height for light switches 6May 31, 2015 10:37 am A sparky told me a long time ago that there was no absolute correct height as everyone has a different take on it however he said from experience the best way is to stand in front of your architrave with your hands by your side then raise your lower arm up from the elbow to 90º. Where your hand touches the wall is where you should mount your switches or take the average of the adults in the house. For us that is about 1150mm off the floor. Then again some like them higher, some lower. It all comes down to personal preference. Stewie Re: Standard height for light switches 7May 31, 2015 1:52 pm Agree with Stewie. My husband is an electrician for last 24 years. He puts his at 1200mm from floor but my current house are at 1350mm and these were installed by the previous owner. They are also fine.
