Browse Forums Building A New House 1 May 30, 2015 11:03 am Hey everyone We are going for our consultation next week, to finalize our plans and exterior colours We are going with a light brick and black roof and garage door but we have a morka finish that we would like to do in a grey sort of colour not to light but not to dark. We have to choose from the taubmans colours and its not going well lol if anyone has a morka finish could you maybe post some pics or give any advice would be great. hope to here from you soon Re: NEED SOME ADVICE 2May 30, 2015 3:22 pm Black roof .... really?!! http://www.abc.net.au/environment/artic ... 661663.htm Re: NEED SOME ADVICE 3May 30, 2015 5:06 pm Black roofs are fashionable. Yeah, they get hot and will probably make cooling more expensive/harder but people want them Good luck Rach. How exciting. What do you mean by 'morka' ... the stuff holding the bricks together ('mortar')? If so, grey is standard and I think looks fine. But a great way to help you decide is to go for a drive around a new estate to see combinations people are using. Also the brick displays (PGH, Austral etc) have lots of walls built with different bricks and different colour mortar. Also the mortar finish can make a difference ... again if you go to a brick display you will see these. Happy days, it's a lot of fun! Re: NEED SOME ADVICE 4May 30, 2015 6:51 pm If you have a look at the Basix ratings for different colour terracotta tiles it's amazing to see that black is the same as most other colours. Unless you want a really light coloured roof, it's not going to make much difference. Don't stress yourself Re: NEED SOME ADVICE 8May 30, 2015 7:43 pm Sure. yes get what you want. But people should be aware dark roofs do absorb more heat. its basic science. And there is a fair bit of difference even according to Monier (if thinking of their tiles) ... http://www.monier.com.au/Professional/B ... urces.aspx They have the actual figures somewhere. There's only one tile (Vodka) that's classified light. Because the trend is for dark colours. Colorbond's the same ... Dark absorbs more light hence heat http://www.thefifthestate.com.au/innova ... port/60257 “Research shows that light coloured roof tiles can lower the air temperature in the roof space by up to nine degrees compared to dark tiles.” Anyway, it's people's own business if they still want a darker colour Re: NEED SOME ADVICE 9May 30, 2015 7:45 pm What is morka finish? I tried google, and nothing was jumping out about what it actually is.. What colour are your bricks? You'll want to pick up the tonings of them, whether they be warm or cool. Then go dark enough to make a contrast. Re: NEED SOME ADVICE 12May 31, 2015 10:08 am Here's an interesting and detailed discussion on black roofs, including comments from all the major roofing manufacturers in Australia. http://www.thefifthestate.com.au/innova ... port/60257 It is also interesting to note how the black roofs are heating up our sea breezes as they blow inland, so even those who try to build sustainable and eco-friendly homes will be negatively impacted by those following the current dark roof fashion trend. Re: NEED SOME ADVICE 13May 31, 2015 1:08 pm I don't think the original poster was asking IF she should have a black roof or the thermal properties of it. Shes said she IS HAVING a black roof and asking for advice for grey taubmans colours to match it. Way off track... Re: NEED SOME ADVICE 14May 31, 2015 5:46 pm Yeah, sorry about that rant. I saw "black roof" and jumped on my hobby horse. Re: NEED SOME ADVICE 15May 31, 2015 7:58 pm I think OP means moroka - the rougher finish than render and what greys would suit. I think tile manufacturers need to make more light coloured choices available, colorbond is not too bad. Thank you so much for the effort. We will use it to talk with builder.
