Browse Forums Building A New House 1 May 17, 2015 1:39 pm Hi all, just after your experiences with gloss & matt tiles. We are building a home and have the two tiles to choose between. The gloss will be mocha colour & the matt will be textured grey. We have young kids & am worried about the gloss being too slippery OR is this just hear say? Also which tiles are easier to keep clean? I really like the gloss but hubby is not so sure. Re: Gloss or Matt tiles? 2May 17, 2015 1:45 pm Gloss can be harder to keep clean, in my experience. Mostly dry water marks etc. I never found them more slippery than matt tiles. I guess it also depends on the colour as to how hard they are to keep looking clean. Also if your mop is a bit too wet, it's a slip hazard. I have unglazed porcelain in a mocha colour with a bit of lighter pattern in it and they show up all the dirt too, just not footprints... Re: Gloss or Matt tiles? 5May 18, 2015 4:13 pm My husband is a removalist and he refused to get gloss tiles because of the marks they show and keeping them clean haha which was hard because our favourite tile only came in gloss so we had to change. I am sure most places are the same. I can't imagine gloss would be any more slippery in your main areas (unless there is a spill), but possibly in wet areas. I love the look of the polished porcelain. I'm going black polished on my bathroom floors. Will likely live to regret it but aesthetics have won over practicality! They love the look of polished porcelain tiles but think that matt tiles are more practical and less slippery. I personally have polished porcelain tiles in a light colour but have never found it to be a problem. On the other hand, polished tiles give light to the room as well as making the area look somewhat bigger. It would be good to check though if the tiles are sealed, stains on unsealed polished porcelain tiles are hard to remove. Re: Gloss or Matt tiles? 8May 18, 2015 7:06 pm Matt tiles require less maintenance & look elegant. I think you should go with Matt tiles for your living area as it will give a new look to your living room & doesn’t require constant cleaning. Gloss tiles give's a bigger look to the area so it would be a better option for small area’s. For your kids place, gloss tiles can be a good option as they are easy to clean but remember maintenance is not easy for gloss tiles.
