Browse Forums Building A New House 1 May 15, 2015 1:33 am We asked a large project builder for a price on a particular home design including site costs and alterations etc and when we met with him he went through all the inclusions and prices but wouldn't give us the quote to take with us. Is this normal? Re: Builder not providing quote? 2May 15, 2015 10:54 am Maybe it depends on the builder, but it doesn't sound normal to me. It sounds like he is trying to stop you from shopping around. I haven't dealt with a lot of different builders but the quotes that I have received were itemised, showing the base price and then all the extra's individually, that way if you need to cut back on anything you can see exactly where your money is being spent. Re: Builder not providing quote? 4May 15, 2015 11:46 am Thanks ajansen. We had gone to another builder who gave us the quote to take away, so I was a bit surprised. Saint Mike - Yes, he told us the price for everything when we were there, but didn't give us any costings to take away. We talked to a few builders that cost everything out by hand and wrote it on a piece of paper, we didn't get that hand written list either but we wrote down prices of things ourselves while we sat with them. Might just depend on how they do things? Maybe you get a proper list when you really sit down and nut out prices? I've had salespersons price things up and not even be willing to give me the price unless I went in to meet them, not even over the phone ball park figure. Others won't cost more than two different things, others did what ever I wanted. No guessing who got the business. With the amount charged for the upgrade the builder is probably charging closer to 100% margin.
